About Amanda

My philosophy of tutoring remains rooted in the famous words of writing center pedagogical giant Stephen North: “Better writers, not better writing.” My goal is to help students cultivate the skills required to improve their writing on their own terms, emphasizing the importance of personal voice and interest/engagement in writing above all else.

My goal is not to raise grades, test scores, or college acceptances. These are all variable, dependent on teachers, assignments, and the circumstances of the submission. They may be nice benefits, desirable outcomes, but they are not my primary goal as a tutor. My goal in tutoring is to empower students with a passion for writing, engage with their interests and skill levels, and help them achieve greater confidence in their abilities to enable them to succeed and thrive in academic settings and beyond.

For me, the most rewarding part of my job is seeing students grow more confident in their writing skills and find a passion for reading and writing through their own interests. This involves understanding their own writing process and addressing aspects they feel they struggle with in a holistic way, as well as making sure to encourage outside reading. Seeing students who claim to hate English or who call themselves "bad" writers become more confident and self-assured in their skills is absolutely my favorite part of my work.

I began teaching when I joined the National English Honors Society at my high school and loved it so much that I applied to work in a similar paid position at my college. I really enjoy hearing about students' journeys with writing, and help to work with them on the aspects they struggle with.

I have worked as a student tutor for more than six years. Currently, I work as a writing consultant at the College of William and Mary, where I am entering my junior year. I have worked with students, business owners, and graduate students at the college, across majors, grades, and skill levels. I work collaboratively with students on essays, personal statements, resumes, job applications, cover letters, spoken presentations, podcasts, slide shows, creative writing projects, law and grad school applications, senior theses, scientific reports, and more.

Typically I like to layout through email the needs of a particular student, be they in regards to a specific course, assignment, or application, or if there are broader skill-based improvements they would like to make. I also like to ask what each student would like to get out of our time together so that we can make sure that we are prioritizing their needs. After that, we usually move to in-person or remote sessions and work on rapport building, scheduling assignment completion plans, and figuring out what we can do together to help address both student and guardian concerns.

I have a history of tutoring multilingual learners and often have students come back for multiple sessions throughout a semester, or even throughout their college career. My clients have ranged from graduate students editing their final thesis, first-year students entering their first college class, those unfamiliar with the structure, grammar, or academic standards of their department's course writing, and students applying to various high-level jobs, internships, colleges, and post-graduate academic institutions.

I would recommend asking them how they measure success in their tutoring. Often times it is easy to measure success through things like grades or test scores, but for me, the biggest sign of a reputable tutor is someone who is willing to individualize their process and make goals based on each student they work with. There is no one size fits all model, and standardized testing is not the only measure of success. Your tutor should be able to see your work together as collaborative and skill-building, not just a game of numbers.
