About Mikaela

I provide tailored and specific English and writing help to each of the youth I work with, continually changing and modifying my approach based on each student's individual need. I love to talk about books and writing styles and try my. hardest to keep all of my tutoring engaging and fun.

My favorite style of writing is the personal statement. I have written many in my time applying to multiple graduate programs and have been working with both college and high school students to help them develop their own narrative voice and write about an experience that helps highlight their strengths and accomplishments in a personal and inviting manner.

I graduated from Fordham University at Lincoln Center where I double majored in African American Studies and Playwriting. While I was at Fordham I served on the executive board for the Black Student Alliance for two years (as the vice president and then the president), and was also a Social Justice Leader through the Dorothy Day Center for Service and Justice at Fordham, in which I helped plan and facilitate Urban Plunge, a pre-orientation program for incoming students that encourages students to become involved in social justice and volunteering in New York City before they begin their freshman year.

About the lesson

I also have extensive experience working with younger people, particularly high schoolers as a college mentor and theatre educator. I have helped several high school seniors navigate the college admission process, frequently edit and provide feedback on their essays, and make sure they are staying on track to achieve their college goals. As mentioned, I have been teaching young women inmates at Rikers Island how to tell their own stories through theatrical expression and am always looking for ways to incorporate art into the lives of those who may not have immediate access to it and look at a life in which we prioritize trauma-informed care. Upon graduation, I worked for a non-profit that engages high school students in Service Learning, continuously adapting my curriculum to challenge high schoolers into having a more global perspective and learn from an earlier age how to be an advocate for their own futures. I have an incredibly strong connection to working with young people and hope to further my career in youth engagement and advocacy.
