About Kayla

I have been teaching English as a New Language (ESL) for two years now in K-8 schools in New York City. I am New York state ESOL certified. I am proficient in French, having studied the language starting in 6th grade and through high school, and then in college where I minored in it.

Teaching a language involves the integration and facilitation of three major key elements, those being: culturally relevent instruction, academic and content-specific vocabulary instruction, and background knowledge. The most effectice way to incite ESL student learning is to rely upon meaningful, authentic, accessible, and relevant content. When I teach a group of students, I design lesson plans that align with what student are learning in English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies so our work is purposeful. I always plan language objectives so students are communicating for a purpose when speaking and writing. This has proved to be the most effective way to learn a language. While tutoring, I design activities aligned to what students are learning in school, or other concepts, depending on the parent's request.

I develop positive and caring relationships with all of my students and they genuinely love learning from me. I have a plethora of engaging online resources that I have aquired through recommendations from other ESL teachers and those I have access to as a teacher online. Once I learn more about both the language ability and the interests of the student I am tutoring, I design tailored activities to meet their needs so that they can grow.

I enjoy meeting students from varied cultures and backgrounds, many of whom immigrated to the United States. I love sharing my passion for the English language and for reading & writing with my students.

I started out as a substitute teacher for Pre-K to eighth grade, then I completed my master's in TESOL. I began student-teaching while in grad school.

I have been teaching English as a New Language in NYC public schools for 2 years now. Currently, I am the ENL teacher for a K-8 charter school.

I talk with them about school and their interests, and from there I assess their language proficiency/ability and use that information (along with their interests) to proceed. My approach is warm, genuine and positive.

The students I work with are ages 5 to 14. I have worked with and currently work with students who speak Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Fulani, Soninke, Wolof, Bengali, Russian, Uzbek, and Urdu.

I would tell them to make sure they feel comfortable with the teacher and that the learning is fun. Learning a language is all about taking risks, so students need to feel comfortable speaking the language with the person they are working with. They also should make sure the teacher does not focus mostly on correcting mistakes; this deters an ESL student's progress. Teachers need to be selective and purposeful about what they choose to correct. Student effort and bravery in a new language needs to be acknowledged and celebrated.

One of my ESL students recently told me that when they came as a new student this year, they were very nervous in their classes, but when they met me, they didn't feel nervous anymore and they felt more calm.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should think about how they see themselves as a language learner and and assess their own language learning strategies and language learning style. Students play a major role in their langauge learning and their attitude determines much of their success. I help students to see that they can make the language learning process work for them, but they must believe it. I strive to instill both this conviction and a positive attutiude in my students, but they need to sustain it.
