About Alessandra

I am an Italian native speaker who has always been passionate about languages. I started learning English in elementary school and have later studied French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, so I know very well the difficulties and exciting parts of the learning process. I started tutoring for English, French, Italian, and history about 7 years ago in Italy, and have worked with children as well as adults, from 2 to about 30 years of age, so I can tailor my lessons and approach to the needs of everyone. I worked as a Teaching Associate in Italian Studies at California State University Long Beach from 2019 to 2021, so I also have experience teaching college level classes, where I have taught older individuals, up to 50 years old. It is never too late to start learning or pick a language back up!

I have a BA in Translation Studies from the University of Bologna (Italy) and a BA in Anthropology from Durham University (UK). I have just completed a Master's in Italian Studies from California State University Long Beach. My strenght in tutoring also comes from the fact that I have worked with different languages in different cultural contexts, and my academic interest focuses on the use of language as well as second and third language acquisition, therefore I have studied and practiced different teaching approaches (such as communicative and intercomprehension).

(concealed information)

I love sharing my knowledge about languages and cultures. I believe that learning languages opens one's mind to different worldviews and human experiences, but can also be a tool to better understand our own language and culture. It is rewarding to teach or tutor, and see students overcome difficulties and succeed.

I started tutoring in 2014 after I graduated from my first BA, because I had had the chance to be an assistant to a professor of Italian Studies at UCSB during an exchange program and I really enjoyed being able to help students learn about my native language and culture. In the years, I found it very rewarding to help younger and older individuals to overcome difficulties and learn how to see the world from different perspectives.

I have a BA in Translation Studies from the University of Bologna, where I worked with Italian, English, and French. This background is incredibly helpful in teaching languages because I understand not only the different grammars, but the uses of the languages and what a student can struggle with in the learning process.

I also have an MA in Italian Studies with focus on second language acquisition and teaching of Italian from California State University Long Beach. Needless to say, this has effectively prepared me to teach Italian and I have also worked as a Teaching Associate from 2019, teaching elementary Italian.

I have experience working as an English teacher for children aged 2 to 11, which means that I know how to approach language teaching with a wide variety of ages and make it fun and interesting.

I have been tutoring (private) since 2014, helping students of all ages in Italian, English, French, and History. So I have plenty of experience coming up with materials and exercises to help students better understand topics they are struggling with.

As a teacher, my main goal is for students to learn how to communicate while feeling comfortable and confident during and after class. The first session would be more about getting to know the student and their priorities and preferences. Depending on language level and needs, I would then develop a tutoring plan. I like to balance the content of my sessions between grammar and culture, as I believe that grammar is better grasped when accompanied by authentic contexts.

I have worked with children aged 2 to 11, teenagers in all grades of middle and high school, and adults from 18 to about 50 years of age.

Look for people who have a broad experience with different types of students and contexts. If looking for a language tutor, look for native speakers or extremely fluent ones, as they will make sessions more fun and interesting by adding authentic material (such as Italian texts, TV show clips, anectodes) and be able to empathize with learning a foreign languge.

While teaching Italian at California State University Long Beach, I have been in charge of 2 different level classes: 100A and 100B. I had a student in 100A who demonstrated great enthusiasm and progressed very well with the grammar and vocabulary. As the pandemic hit, everyone was deeply affected and students in general had more difficulties in class. This student, despite hardships at home, continued with 100B with the same enthusiasm and became Outstanding Student of the semester. They have also told me that they can't wait for the travel bans to be lifted to go to Italy and continue studying the language. This instance is an example of what makes my job incredibly rewarding: I feel a sense of accomplishment when I see my students succeed and want to go to Italy to know my culture.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals at the end of the turoring sessions: do you want to be able to hold a conversation? Read a comic book? Go to Italy and order pizza at a restaurant? Or do you just want to pass your class?
