I weave ear training and music theory with guitar technique and performance skills into finely crafted lessons to inspire your love of playing guitar and motivate you to acheive your goals.
My former students have been awarded scholarships at many of the top music schools in the country, including San Francisco Conservatory of Music and USC.
I love to teach students of every age, from young children ages 4 and above through adults of any age.
Whether you're a complete beginner or preparing for a career in music, I will support you every step of the way.
Learning to play a musical instrument in not only fun, it is also a vital part of being human, expressing ourselves, and connecting to history and culture. The daily practice of music is a component of our health and adds to every aspect of our lives. For young students, music study can direct the entire learning trajectory, inspring intellectual curiosity and fostering confidence in mastering new skills. For any age, music study sparks joy. During times of transition, loss, or trauma, music study helps us grow and heal. Music is part of our health and well being. Learning to play a music instrument is part of our strength, resilience, and connection to one's self and others.
I have been sharing what I love since I was ten years old, leading my own bands. Professionally, I opened my first guitar school when I was 29, just after earning my master's degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University. Since then, I have also learned to teach drums, bass, piano, ukulele and banjo.

I ask my students about the music they want to play and what inspires them. I help my new students establish a daily practice routine so that they can develop technique and musicianship skills. Step-by-step, I work with my students and guide them toward achieving their goals and finding deep satisfaction as confident, expressive musicians.
I have had the privilege to teach a wide variety of students, from age 4 and above, including a number of retired professionals who decided to study music for their own enjoyments. Some of my students were professional musicians who wanted to learn a new skill while others were complete beginners. A number of my former students have won competitions and earned scholarships to study at the finest music conservatories in the country.
I have also successfully worked with students who have had significant learning challenges in other areas of their life, including dyslexia, autism, ADHD, 2e, and others. Several of my students learned to read music before they could read.
Many of my students report that they do better at school after studying guitar, drums, or piano with me.
Ask the teacher about how she or he prepares students to perform and what performance opportunities are available at the school or music studio.
Recently, I performed in my 12-member jazz ensemble Mary Lou's Apartment. Several people jumped into the aisles to dance. Playing music for dancers is an incredible musical experience!

Details
I offer a yearlong training program called THE STUDIO, which includes weekly private lessons from August 29 to June 6th (with holiday breaks), monthly performance opportunities, and seminars on special topics. Call for tuition details.
I also offer group classes (2-4 students) and private lessons scheduled at your convenience, and weekend workshops. Please contact me for a full description of these offerings.
