About Dan
In addition to my several years of teaching experience which allowed me to develop numerous methods of addressing students needs, my previous work experiences have enhanced my ability to engage students in a more meaningful way by connecting the subject matter to real world situations.
I entered the teaching profession all those years ago because of my desire to help others aquire more knowledge of the world around them and develop skills in utilizing that information to accomplish tasks, solve problems and hopefully make a positive contribution to "their world". I have never lost that enthusiasm and continue to enjoy working with students at all levels.
Following my service as a commissioned officer in the Navy, I took over my father's restaurant and eventually managed a larger operation in a bigger market but felt a need to be involved in something more "meaningful". Having had a longtime layman's interest in all aspects of history and a desire to share that interest with others, I began my teaching career as a long-term substitute for a year during which time I taught numerous subjects at all levels from Grades 6 through 12 while developing a positive relationship with numerous teachers and the school district.
I was hired full-time for the next Fall Semester and taught in the same District for the next 23 years before finally retiring.
My business degree from Rice University laid the foundation for my service in the Navy and later positions in the private sector and eventually almost 25 years in education. As a naval officer and later in restaurant management, I was responsile for managing large groups of individuals and related equipment. During my teaching career, I developed numerous skills in helping students of all backgrounds achieve their goals in and out of the classroom. I also served as Social Studies Dept Chairperson as well as being on the History Curriculum Committee for the school district.

It's important to determine a student's preferred learning style in order to make the learning process as efficient as possible. It is also helpful to know a student's other interests which can be used to make the material more relevant. Helping a student find a way to relate to the subject at hand can make the process that much easier.
Over the course of my career I was engaged with students from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities ranging from 6th graders struggling with life in the Barrio to high school honors students in Advanced Placement programs and all levels of interests, abilities and circumstances in between. Some had aspirations of attending the highly selective major university of their choice, others just wanted to get a degree somewhere while some simply wanted to eventually graduate high school and get a job.
Regardless of a student's circumstances and goals (or lack thereof), I felt a duty and desire to help each of them see the possibilities and encourage them to give it their best shot and see where it might take them. You just never know.
Find out their teaching philosophy as to what they think is the best way to learn any given subject. Do they think a student's background and personal interests are important in the learning process and the actual acquisition of knowledge or is it more important to simply accumulate information? One size does NOT fit all and one method is not necessarily the most effective in all situations.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Each student needs to have some idea as to why they need help. Difficulty in understanding causes and effects? Remembering chronology of various events? Explaining the importance of historical events? A desire to make the subject matter more interesting in some way? Do they just want to learn the basics or is there a need to develop a more indepth understanding?
