I'm happy help you learn self defense and/or traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Throws, joint locks, take downs, all kinds of fun stuff.
As the program director for American Jiu Jitsu of Maplewood, I work with many people to help sharpen their self-defense skills. I love Jiu Jitsu and sharing it with others is a big part of the fun.
Teaching helps me to improve my own skills as well. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my knowledge to help others develop their techniques or to make them more efficient.

First, they should to learn to fall correctly without getting hurt. We can also work on some simple techniques that don't require any falling knowledge.
Next, we'll look at situations that they concern the student. We want to give them good answers to those questions that are simple and easy.
Then, we'll branch out from there looking at similar situations, what-ifs and I'll suggest further situations that they might like to prepare for.
Eventually, we'll talk more about concepts that are reflected in multiple techniques and help them to understand those ideas and learn to better string techniques together.
Finally, we'll work on free-flowing combat, where the only wrong answer is doing nothing. At this point, they should have an arsenal of techniques to choose from to defend themselves and they should be able to choose whether or not to seriously hurt their attacker.
As young as Kindergarten and as old as mid 70s. Big people , little people... I've worked with so many different people, Jiu Jitsu is very effective for small people, but when big people know how to use it properly... well, watch out :)
Make sure the teacher knows what you want to learn. There's a lot of different aspects to Jiu Jjitsu. If you want to focus on ground work, I may not be the best instructor for you. If you want to work on throws, take-downs, sweeps, joint locks, pins, chokes, and/or submissions, I'm more your guy.
