About Brett
I have over 10 years of experience delivering the best tutoring services for ACT, SAT, and college admissions consulting. I have worked for Revolution Prep, Victory Step, and privately. My preferred curriculum is an adaptation of the Princeton Review strategies and methodologies.
My approach to standardized test prep is systematic and strategic. I teach ACT/SAT-specific test-taking strategies, such as time management tricks and methods for eliminating wrong answers. I also teach content and strategies unique to each subject, typically followed by a selection from a practice test to apply and reinforce the approach. We review thought process and answer selection for errors and analyze missed questions and any other questions that caused difficulty. The explicit goal is to model and cultivate effective application of the strategies to build knowledge, experience, and confidence.
As we progress, the session work flow tends to shift to review, application, and repetition. Between each session, I assign homework. It generally ramps up from one or a few untimed practice sets upwards to an entire timed test. Together, we go subject by subject. We review the strategies, tackle a new sample set, and review the mistakes -- from the homework and practice tests for that same subject.
The goal is to continually reinforce the strategies, adjusting the student's perspective on his or her original answer choice, in order to ultimately grasp the reasoning for the correct 'best' answer to every question.
We will typically meet for two-hour sessions. I also send an emailed summary of the session within 48 hours.
A little background about me: I grew up in North Dallas and attended Greenhill School and the University of Texas at Austin. I have dual Bachelors degrees in Communications and Asian Studies. I studied abroad in Beijing and speak Mandarin and Spanish. I previously worked in advertising and while living in New York City was Vice-President of a small tech company. I decided to become a teacher in 2016 and have certifications in English and Social Studies. I currently teach Geography and coach boys soccer. I have been providing SAT and ACT and college essay consulting in my spare time since 2010 because I enjoy the challenge, find the work meaningful, and love working with kids to help them achieve their potential and realize their dreams.
I also provide expert consultation on Résumés and Admissions Essays. Recent graduates have enrolled at esteemed schools including UT Austin Plan II, NYU, Vanderbilt, Brown, University of Arizona Business Honors, University of Indiana Business Honors, SMU, TCU, and more.
