About Elise
Have you ever felt like math was a talent you just didn't have? Like you just don't have the mind for it? Well, I'm here to help you kick that thought right out the window! I've known plenty of teachers that are unable to teach math, but I've NEVER met a committed student that can't learn it!
I work with kids and adults of all ages, from elementary math to calculus and more! I also have experience working with people with learning disabillitys like ADHD ADD, NVLD, Aspergers and poor excutive function.
So often kids (and adults!) just dismiss themselves as a person that "can't do math". Often this idea has been reenforced year after year in the public school system. This requires not only a unique teaching strategy to overcome but also the reasurance for them to believe math is somthing they CAN learn.
My favorite part of working with students is watching their confidence in themselves grow as they overcome the obstacles they once thought were impossible. There are so many kids and adults that have concluded that they are never going to understand math, simply because they never have before. Watching people realize what they are truely capable of makes everything worth it.
I started tutoring in highschool when I noticed I had a knack for breaking down concepts in a way people easily understood. In college I noticed the higher level the math became the more incapable my teachers were of explaining any of it. They were well quallified to be sure and you had no doubt that THEY knew what they were talking about. Its just nobody else did. Suddenly I understood the plight of my elementary school classmates long ago. Its not just about knowing the material, you have to be able to cater to the learning style of the student. Seeing people struggle with this problem is what inspired me to want to help them through it.
I was a tutor of kids with learning disabilities for several years, I also studied Acuarial Mathmatics for 4 years at Worcester Polytechnical Institute.

I when I begin working with a new student, I like to assess two things.
First, I like to establish the current level of math that the student feels confidant in. This gives us a soild base to work off of. Math is mostly cumulative, and you can't build a castle on pillars of sand.
Second, I establish any disabillities or emotional barriers that would prevent the student from learning. Do they have any learning problems? Do they have a long history of feeling inadeqate academicly? Do they have special needs that have been overlooked? All of these things are important for the long term sucess of a student.
I have worked with a wid array of students with different skill levels and abillities. I have experience with kids and with overcoming learning disabilities.
Find some who speaks in your language. It dosen't matter how well the teacher knows the material if you can't understand a word he's saying.

My child has ADHD and was having trouble with his algebra, Elise was able break up the concepts in a way that he could understand all while navigating his CONSTANT inattention.
