About Carlos

Hello! I’m Carlos Valladares, a dedicated and experienced math tutor with over 12 years of teaching experience. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Video Game Design.

Math has always been a passion of mine, and I genuinely enjoy helping others understand it in a clear and approachable way. I know math can feel challenging at times, but with the right support and consistent practice, anyone can improve—and even come to enjoy it!

Throughout the years, I’ve worked with students of all ages and levels—from elementary school to college—and I specialize in helping those who feel they’re “just not good at math.” I focus on breaking down concepts into simple, understandable steps, using different methods depending on each student’s learning style.

Many of my students have made significant progress, and parents often highlight my patience, clarity, and ability to connect with learners. Before joining this website, I also tutored on Chegg.com, where I received hundreds of positive reviews (you can see a sample on my profile image).

In addition to general math tutoring, I also help students prepare for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and GRE. And as a native Spanish speaker with over 5 years of experience teaching the language, I also offer Spanish lessons for those wanting to learn or improve.

I offer online sessions at a competitive hourly rate and can help with a wide range of subjects, including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and more.

If you’re looking for a patient, knowledgeable, and supportive tutor, I’d be happy to help you achieve your academic goals. Feel free to reach out!

I have always had a passion for math and I have seen firsthand that most of my fellow students (back in high school, and college) were most of the time having issues with math and they were asking for my help so a desire to help others to understand it grew. I began tutoring math during my undergraduate studies and fell in love with the process of helping students understand complex concepts. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, I decided to keep learning Math and enrolled in a Master's degree program in Math.

During my master's program, I had the opportunity to become an Instructor Professor and this confirmed my decision to learn math and help others to understand it.

After a few years of experience, I realized that I wanted to focus more on one-on-one instruction and helping students who were struggling. So, I started tutoring on the side and eventually transitioned to full-time tutoring.

Throughout my teaching and tutoring experience, I have had the opportunity to work with students of all ages and abilities, and I have learned so much, thanks to them. During the process, I learned about different teaching methods and strategies. I am passionate about helping students achieve their goals, and I believe that everyone can learn math with the right approach.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the Central University of Venezuela and I studied for 3 years for a Master's degree in Math from the same University, even though I couldn’t finish it due to personal reasons. Additionally, I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Videogame design.

Throughout my education, I have taken a variety of math classes, including Algebra, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus, Topology, Geometry, and Trigonometry.

I have also participated in various professional development training throughout my career. I am also continuously reading about new pedagogical methods and research on teaching mathematics and how to improve students' learning and engagement.

In addition to my formal education and training, I have over 12 years of experience as a math tutor and teacher. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, and I have a proven track record of helping students improve their math skills and achieve their goals.

1. The first step is to schedule a free 30-minute initial consultation with the student and their parent(s) or guardian(s) to discuss their needs and goals. During this meeting, I will ask about the student's current math level, any specific areas they are struggling with, and their goals for our sessions.

2. Next, I will use the information gathered from the initial consultation to develop a customized lesson plan that is tailored to the student's individual needs.

3. During our tutoring sessions, I will use a variety of teaching methods, such as visual aids, examples, and practice problems, to help the student understand and master the material. I will also provide regular feedback and progress updates to the student and their parent(s) or guardian(s). I will send a PDF file with the work done after each session.

Throughout my teaching and tutoring experience, I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of students. I have worked with:

• Students of all grade levels, from elementary school to college.

• Students with a wide range of abilities and learning styles.

• Students with special needs, such as those with ADHD.

• Students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

• Students who are preparing for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, and others.

I have found that each student is unique and requires a personalized approach. I am able to adapt my teaching methods to meet the needs of each student and help them achieve their goals

1. Research the tutor’s qualifications and experience: Look for a teacher who has a degree in mathematics or a related field, and who has experience teaching or tutoring math. Also, look for a teacher who has experience working with students at your grade level and with your specific learning needs.

2. Look for a tutor who can customize the lessons: The best teachers are able to adjust their teaching style and approach to meet the needs of each student.

3. Schedule a consultation: Before committing to a tutor, schedule a consultation with them to discuss your needs and goals. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of the tutor’s teaching style and approach.

4. Check the tutor’s availability: Make sure that the teacher is available at the times that work best for you.

5. Look for positive feedback and testimonials: Look for a tutor who has positive feedback (reviews) from previous students or parents. This can give you a sense of the tutor’s effectiveness and the results they have achieved with other students.

6. Make sure you feel comfortable with the tutor: It's important to find a tutor you feel comfortable with, someone who you can trust and rely on. You should feel comfortable asking questions and discussing your concerns with them.

Overall, finding the right tutor takes some research, but it's worth the effort. With the right tutor, you will be able to achieve your goals and improve your math skills.

One recent event that I am fond of is when I helped a student pass the New York State math test to become an English teacher. The student was a highly motivated individual who had always been passionate about teaching but struggled with math. She had been trying to pass the test several times and had been unsuccessful.

I worked with the student over several months, providing one-on-one tutoring and coaching. We focused on the specific math concepts that the student had difficulty with, and I used a variety of teaching methods and resources to help her understand and master the material.

What I enjoyed the most was seeing the student's progress and confidence grow over time. She went from feeling frustrated and overwhelmed with math to understanding the concepts and achieving success on the test.

The student was finally able to pass the math test and fulfill her dream of becoming an English teacher. She was ecstatic and thanked me for all the help I provided.

It was a very rewarding experience for me as a tutor, to help someone achieve their goals and make a difference in their life. I am proud to have played a role in this student's success and I will always remember this experience fondly.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What are my specific learning goals? Are there certain math concepts or topics that I need help with?

2. What is my current math level? How well do I understand the material?

3. What are my learning style and preferences? Do I prefer visual aids, hands-on activities, or verbal explanations?

4. What is my availability and schedule? When am I available for tutoring sessions?

5. How much am I willing to invest in my education? What is my budget for tutoring?

6. What are my expectations for the teacher and the tutoring sessions? How often do I want to meet and for how long?

7. Are there any specific needs that I may have, such as a language or cultural background?
