About William
In high school, I struggled with math and science, and I knew that I needed to work hard to get better. With the help of friends and tutors, I learned to excel in these subjects, ultimately earning a double-major in Materials Engineering and Mathematics from Iowa State University, followed by a Ph.D. from MIT.
The whole time, I worked to give back what I had learned, tutoring struggling students and refugees while I was in high school, working with elementary through college-level students in high school, and TAing for advanced materials-science subjects to pay for my Ph.D. -- as well as volunteering to tutor local high-school students. I feel incredibly fortunate for the opportunities that I have received, and I view it as a duty and a responsibility to share those opportunities with others. Moreover, I take great joy in working with people -- trying to figure out the way they see the world, so that I can help them face the subjects that challenge them.
For over 10 years, I have worked with students in a variety of different roles -- either as a tutor or as a TA. My experience runs the gamut of experience and enthusiasm levels -- from high-school/college students to refugees -- and I absolutely love working on anything technical or quantitative, since I enjoy teaching people not to be afraid of these subjects.
