About Umran

I’m Umran, and I’m a math tutor in Charlotte, NC. I'm here to help you succeed in any high school-level math class!

Originally from northern California, I graduated in 2018 with a double major in Philosophy and Astrophysics (a long story) from the University of California, Berkeley, where I undertook significant mathematical coursework and earned a 3.73 cumulative GPA. In high school, I scored 800 and 35 in math on the SAT and ACT exams, respectively. I also have teaching experience, having designed and given lessons to over 50 students as a TA for Berkeley's introductory astronomy class during my final semester of college. I now work as a quantitative analyst in the financial sector in uptown Charlotte, where I use mathematics and statistics on a regular basis. On weekends, I offer tutoring services in the south Charlotte area in all levels of high school math.

In addition to my quantitative skills, my background in philosophy will be a unique asset to you; I have exceptional strength in writing and speaking, and my college coursework in philosophy heavily stressed the importance of explaining complicated ideas and arguments with extreme clarity and precision. Throughout college, I was often praised for my ability to present and explain technical concepts to others. So you can count on me to make any math concept make sense for you!

If you feel unconfident in your math skills, I can relate; I entered college thinking (and hoping!) that I would never take another math class again. Even though I had done well in high school math, I didn't think of myself as the "math type"; I actually didn't like math very much at all!

It took a semester of college math before things finally clicked for me. The key was to find a way to relate math to things I already enjoyed––in my case, analytical writing and argumentation. Doing math is all about making arguments to come to a conclusion, and there is usually more than one good argument to make!

Since then, I have come to enjoy math both for its logical structure and its artistic beauty. Equally amazing is the fact that mathematics can be used to model the universe around us and predict its behavior, a fact that has always fascinated me as a student of astronomy. I hope to make math a more pleasant experience for you too!
