About Nate
I am a graduate level mathematics instructor with experience in curriculum and textbook design. My primary interests are in applied mathematics for game development, topology (study of shapes), and linear algebra. Previously I studied higher dimensional Category Theory, a branch of mathematics which serves as unifying language for all of modern algebra.
I have privately tutored topology for UC Santa Cruz and advanced linear algebra for UCLA. These days I am living abroad teaching very advanced mathematics to people interested in the games industry. As a professional game designer as well as a mathematician, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to present deep systems to people, and studying how they learn and what motivates them.
I have a lot of experience working with students of very different experience levels and very different motivations for their studies. Part of what makes a teacher good is their ability to personalize the information for your needs, your skills, and your prior intuitions. My goal is to make every theorem feel like a discovery rather than a fact to memorize, and to motivate it in a way that connects with your ambitions in life.
I work professionally as a teacher for graduate and undergraduate students in game development. I teach both math and game design courses, and designed both curriculums.
Game development relies on suprisingly advanced areas of mathematics that aren't often seen in other disciplines at the beginner level. We often deal with very advanced applications of linear algebra as well as lots of 3D (and sometimes 4D) geometry. Both of the courses I teach bring students from very little mathematical background up into topics that usually are not seen outside of a graduate department, so I have a lot of experience explaining complex ideas in simple terms.

Before we get started I prefer to ask as many questions as possible. Its important to get a feel for where a student's strengths and weaknesses are-- even professional mathemetitians rely on different types of intuition when they think about problems, depending on where they are strongest.
I also make sure to ask upfront what a student's goals are. Are they just trying to pass this course, or are they trying to prepare for a math-heavy carreer in some specific field? There are lots of ways of explaining different topics (especially at the college level) and so I try to make it a point to set up their thought process in a way that wont make whatever class comes next seem jarring or unrelated.
Once we are done with questions we work through practice problems as we would in a typical session. If the topic is a new one I run through the ideas briefly, and then illustrate the concepts with the practice problems. If the student has brought the questions with them we run through those, and otherwise I try to tailor my examples to address each core concept that I want the student to understand.
I have worked with college applicants rusty on math all the way up to math majors. Typically I work with students who are interested in algebra, precalculus, calculus, or linear algebra. I am trained in more advanced topics (topology, etc) but usually only touch on these briefly and in my own classes.
The most important thing is this: do not assume that the most educated person is the best teacher. Being good at math and being good at explaining math are two different skills. Often times you get research mathemeticians whose mental models are so built up over the years that they forget which "basic" things new students struggle with. On the other hand, there is also the type of tutor who can calculate integrals in their head but doesn't have any insight beyond symbol pushing. This is good for students with strong memorization skills who just want to brute force the class, but its not a good strategy if your goal is long term retention and preparation for future courses.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ideally students should try to get a grasp of what topics they feel strongest on and where they need help. They should also try to get a grasp of how they think about problems and have examples of things that they found easy and things that they found difficult.
That said, a good tutor will ask these questions and find out that information. If a tutor does not ask you these questions that suggests they are not very good at tutoring.

Details
Currently I only offer online courses because I am travelling internationally due to my professional teaching obligations.
For algebra and precalc I charge $30/hr. For calc and intro linear algebra I charge $35. For proof-based courses (i.e. upper division math) I discuss pricing on a case by case basis.
Sometimes for proof based classes I am asked to work out solutions in advance, or do other work outside of our scheduled appointment. I am happy to do this but have to charge for my work online or offline.
