About Aidan
Hello!
My name is Aidan, and I've been a college tutor for 3 years! I specialize in Electromagnetic Physics, Calculus I-III, and Mechanics, as while as trying to find time for a little Philosophy.
In terms of experience, I was the lone volunteer for Binghamton University's tutoring program in calc-based EM physics. My friendliness, clarity, and empathy helped dozens of students over the years in one of the hardest intro classes our university offered.
As a tutor, I focus on hands-on problem solving rather than rote instruction. I've always found that people learn best by doing, and often with a little help students surprise themselves with how much they know.
When I'm learning, I love the moment when everything clicks, where all the disparate parts of a topic slam together and suddenly make sense. My favorite part of my job is when I get to step back and help someone reach that perfect flash of understanding.
Beyond just excelling in all manner of college STEM classes, I worked for years as a tutor for Binghamton University’s University Tutoring Service (UTS). The hiring process involved applications, interviews, and mandatory in person and online training. Once hired, there were regular inspections to ensure we maintained the same level of quality across all our sessions.
I’ve taught in all kinds of situations, from focused one-on-one learning all the way to leading final exam reviews for lecture halls packed with a hundred engineering students.

I really like to ask my students questions! Often, I’ll ask them to explain whatever topic we’re talking about to me, in their own words (how do we recognize a couple moment? Why did the electron go left instead of right?) Then, we correct and talk about any broad conceptual gaps or misunderstandings.
Once we have a solid foundation, we can move on to applications. I typically have the student do 2-5 problems a session, starting with simple conceptual questions to difficult, multi-part “exam” questions. My goal is to help the process of understanding something, rather than just lecture at someone. If I only speak up a few times to help, I consider that an extremely successful session!
I’ve mostly worked with college students and high schoolers. I’m definitely open to work with adults or kids. The only “requirement” is that they're open to help and motivated to do well!
A few months ago I was meeting a friend for lunch when I got a phone call. It was my friend Jesse, stressing about the MCAT, and his study materials were being frustratingly obtuse. So, leaning against a random storefront on 30th street, I began to give him an impromptu introduction to the differences between magnetic and electric fields. We only talked for six or seven minutes, but by the end of it he was animated and asking all the right questions.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to understand what you’re missing, and what areas you want to talk about! When I ask a student what they need help with, and they respond with “...everything?”, it’s difficult to actually narrow down what to talk about. But if someone comes in saying “I just can’t seem to nail down integration by parts,” then it’s much easier to have a productive time.

Aidan was a great help, especially for quantitative topics like mechanics. Extremely patient and definitely works with the goal that you understand a topic from base principles up, as opposed to just memorization of higher level concepts.
Aidan is an wonderful and patient teacher, and is always happy to answer any and all questions you may have. His patience is matched only by his versatility, as he has shown significant competency in teaching individuals on subjects across a wide spectrum of difficulty levels--from beginner mathematics to advanced undergraduate level physics. Regardless of the subject difficulty however, he is undoubtedly someone who will make sure you truly comprehend what is being taught by the end of the day. I was mentored in electrostatics and magnetism by Aidan during my training to take the MCAT exam, and physics is no longer my greatest weakness. I highly recommend this tutor to anyone who wants to learn adequately, but also at their own pace.
