About Peter

As a tutor, I would say that my teaching methods orient around ensuring student engagement and critical thinking by asking a lot of questions when solving problems. I believe that my job is to promote an environment where students can have more curiosity about material, and adapt well in new situations where the answers are not simply given in a textbook.

I enjoy it whenever I see students grow and become wiser and more curious individuals. For me, it feels rewarding to see people's personal growth and makes me motivated to improve my teaching skills even further.

I am a current undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon University majoring in Physics and Cognitive Science. This semester, I was a student peer tutor for my intro to computer science course, where I taught a student one-on-one. Beforehand, I was a peer tutor for my high school, Phillips Exeter Academy, where I had helped people solve their math problems and editted people's papers.

First, I socialize with the student, learning about their interests and their personality. Then, I ask the student about what they know about the topic they are interested in learning about so I can understand the person's previous knowledge.

When I feel like I understand how much a student understands the material, I then explain the topics that the student does not know about, ensuring that everything relates to previous material they have learned; this is done to ensure the student understands a concept from a big-picture perspective.

Then, to completely understand material, we would work on practice problems together. During this process, I like asking a lot of questions so that the student is critically thinking and solving the problem themselves instead of me.

If the student is preparing for an exam, I ensure that the student attempts a practice exam of some sort before the test date.

If the student is preparing for a standardized test like the SSAT, SAT, ACT, or another test of the like, I put more emphasis on the practice exam portion of my teaching style.

I have taught high school and college students through my home institution. When I was a camp counselor, I had also mentored middle school students.

Aside from discussing generic tutoring credentials, I believe that learning anything academic-related is a mix of learning from specific cases and learning from abstract definitions. Moreover, the student needs to associate these specific cases and abstract definitions together through active problem-solving. I believe the student should look for a tutor that both teaches the student to think critically about problems and apply the knowledge they already understand.
