About JoAnna
I became a teacher to instill a love of learning and a passionate pursuit of it in every person I teach! I have taught for 6 years as a 1st and 2nd grade teacher and I have tutored many students throughout the years in both literacy and in math. I have tutored individuals from 2nd grade through college level in addition to teaching a small group of 7th and 8th graders. I have used what I learned while gaining my degree from Alverno College in Elementary & Middle School Education with a minor in math to instill a love of learning in students of all age levels. My goal is to help every student to understand that they not only have the ability to achieve their learning targets, but they have the ability to surpass even their own wildest expectations. Equipping each and every student with the learning strategies and tools that they will need to be successful in life is one of my top priorities. As the popular saying goes, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." My goal is to teach my students how to learn and how to fall in love with learning so that their lives will be forever changed even after our time learning together.
I absolutely love knowing that I played a small part in opening the doors of success for every person that I work with. Seeing the change in a person's love of learning and confidence in their abilities makes every moment worth it. In the 6 years that I have taught 1st and 2nd graders, I have learned that any one-sie-fits-all approach will fail. I love connecting learning to each person's interests and passions to individualize learning. While attending Alverno College where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary & Middle School Education with a minor in Mathematics, I learned a wide variety of tools and techniques to use to teach each person relevant things that motivate them to learn. To continue my own learning, I continued my education by taking a TEFL course which equipped me with the tools necessary to teach English as a Foreign Language. I continue to use these experiences to change the lives of the students I teach, tutor, and guide to success!
Through the process of really contemplating what I desired to do when I grew up, I realized that the times that I felt most happy was when I was teaching. When I was in high school, I truly enjoyed the times when my young, curious second-cousin would come over and start asking simple yet profound questions such as "What is thunder and lightning?". I spent hours talking with him and teaching him about the world in which we live. He asked many questions that I simply didn't know the answer to so we had a great time researching to learn more! This was a precious time in which we learned together in very informal and fun ways. These experiences inspired me to become a teacher so that I could share these precious moments with others and explore the world together with my students.
I have received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary & Middle Education with a minor in Mathematics from Alverno College. Alverno has been recognized as a leader in the training of teachers. They focus on instilling positive character and professional excellence in the women that graduate from their college.
I also am pursuing a certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language/Teaching English as a Second Language. This certificate will allow me to unlock the mysteries of the English language for students who desire to learn English to truly thrive in a world in which English is commonly accepted as the language of business.

The very first thing I do when working with a new student is simply get to know them! It is such a simple step but an absolutely crucial one! If my goal is to tailor learning to the passions and desires of my students, then I must first understand what those passions and desires are. Then, I use those personal aspects to customize the lessons that I teach so that learning is relevant and interesting to the student. I also use informal assessments to determine what the student knows already so I can use that as a foundation to build of of. Through those assessments, I am able to plan next steps in the learning process. Throughout the process of working with each student, I continually inform the student (and the student's parents, if applicable) of the progress that is made and ways to continue learning inbetween the time I spend with the student. Ultimately, I work as a team with the student and family to ensure that each student is equipped with the tools to be successful with or without my guidance.
I have worked with students of all ages, ethnicities, backgrounds, and interests. During my education at Alverno College, I was able to work with students in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th grades. Additionally, I was recommended by my college professors to tutor a fellow college student in mathematics (algebra). Upon graduating college, I began teaching 1st & 2nd grade in a multicultural, multi-age classroom. I taught 1st & 2nd grade for 6 wonderful years and was able to learn so much from all of the wonderful students that I was able to teach. In addition to teaching 1st & 2nd grade, I devoted my time to tutoring a wide variety of students in English literacy and Mathematics. Below is a summary of my tutoring experience by age:
-2nd grade student in literacy
-6th grade student in literacy
-7th & 8th grade students in math
-8th grade student with special needs in literacy & math
-8th grade student in pre-algebra
-9th grade student in algebra
-Adult students in English as a Foriegn/Second Language
All of these valuable experiences teaching a wide-variety of students have been truly inspiring and life-changing. I have developed trusting relationships with so many wonderful people throughout the years.
