About Thomas

Thomas Lindsay, whose students have populated this country’s finest universities, conservatories and summer festivals for many years, became a member of the applied music faculty at VCU after serving nearly 36 years as a respected violinist with the Dallas Symphony and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as violin and chamber music professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Morris College in New Jersey. Mr. Lindsay’s work on “The Art and Science of String Performance” (pub. Alfred) has made him the leading authority, worldwide, on the works of Samuel Applebaum world-wide.

During his career, Mr. Lindsay has been first violinist of the Paganiniana String Quartet and the Berlin String Quartet. He has served as concertmaster of the New Jersey Pops Orchestra, the Atlantic Symphonette, and the New Jersey Chamber Symphony. He has coached students for professional orchestra auditions, and teaches students of all ages, master classes and has presented workshops in many States and Canada for the American String Teachers’ Association, MTNA, and at numerous colleges, including Yale University.

Mr. Lindsay is founder of the Cherry Hill Philharmonic, the New Jersey Youth Symphony in conjunction with the NJSO, the South Jersey Youth Orchestra, and the International FAME Festival. He has served as president of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Board of Directors and artistic advisor to three conductors of the New York Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall.

Recently, Mr. Lindsay served as Concertmaster of Symphonicity, the official orchestra of Virginia Beach for six years, and the Millennium Symphony (recordings for ERM and Sony). He continues to perform as a chamber musician and soloist. Mr. Lindsay is a member of the Virginia Arts Festival committee, serving as program chairman for the Williamsburg division.

Thomas Lindsay is currently Director of Chamber Music for the Philadelphia International Music Festival in conjunction with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
