About Noel

As a recent graduate from a master's program I have unique insight into the challenges students face as they grapple with complex material and work to balance various different class subjects with extra curriculars. This puts me in a unqiue position to better understand the student and more effectively address their learning needs. Although I am a recent graduate, I can explain how my educational background is still thorough enough to make me adept explanation of various biological topics as well being capable of offering insights into academia and laboratory work.

I have experience as a University Teaching Assistant and have a master's degree in Microbiology. I'm also familiar with virology and immunology. I have a firm grip of AP biology and college bio 101 principles. My previous coursework has also included organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, physics and calculus. I a firm grip on key concepts and theories within biology as well as the scientific method along with the ins and outs of laboratory research. I love my field and am skilled in distilling complicated concepts into simpler principles. I am also proficient in the use of video chat services as well as other digital learning tools like power point.

I love being able to share my enthusiasm for the topics that fascinate me and being able to help students grow as thinkers and professionals. It's wonderful that simply talking about the things I love can play a significant role in equipping a student to pursue their dreams.

I have a bachelor's degree in microbiology as well as a minor in philosophy which I believe bolsters my critical thinking skills as well as my ability to break down information into more manageable bare essentials. My master's degree in microbiology not only adds to my understanding of biology but gives me insight into scientific writing and academia. It also has informed me with valuable hands on experience regarding laboratory research and the aspects of that research that aren't often conveyed in typical biology classes. I also spent a semester as a teaching assistant and so have practice in ascertaining a student's level of understanding and helping clarify academic material for them.

I think the first step ought to be a big picture look at the class. This means looking at the course outline as well as how the student is evaluated (how many exams are there? Are these exams primarily characterized by multiple choice, short answer or essay questions? ect). From there it's important to understand what the student is struggling with. Is the problem in grasping a particular topic or adapting to course work that requires different learning strategies from what the student is used to? From there I can put together a plan of what information we ought to be focusing on, what learning strategies I ought to reccomend and how I should format my own explanations. From then on its a matter of tracking progress regularly and adjusting methods as needed until the desired results are acheived.

I've primarily worked with college level students from different parts of the country and some of whom were from outside the US.

The teacher's level of knowledge and expertise are certainly important but the most intelligent or professionally accomplished scientist will not necessarily be the best teacher. Be sure to make sure this person is adept in understanding the student's perspective and can be flexible in finding different ways to explain the same idea. My professor for electricity and magnetism was a brilliant man, but many of my peers were frustrated with his lessons because he simply couldn't grasp their perspective and why things that seemed obvious to him weren't clicking for them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals in seeking a tutor? Though I'm passionate about learning for learning's sake, I understand there are times when you simply need a good grade in a class to move toward the more relevant requirements. So it's good to know and be straightforward about whether what you want is to develop a deep understanding of foundational knowledge necessary for future endeavors or if it is to find the most efficient way to surpass an academic hurdle.

It is also very important to have an idea of what learning strategies do and don't work for you. Do you need to talk things through outloud to solidify them, or do you find writing lists to be more helpful? Or are you more of a visual learner who prefers diagrams, color coded notes and idea webs? This is key to getting effective help.
