About Megan

I have a Stanford PhD and a BA from Yale, both in History. Since 2008 I have taught at Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSF and DeAnza Community College. I work with middle and high school students privately on essay writing, liberal arts subjects like history, literature, civics, research skills development, presentation skills and college application preparation. I have particular interest in project based learning and am also familiar with ADHD adaptative approaches.

Note: I am happy to arrange meetings in mutually convenient locations like coffee shops and libraries .

I love working one-on-one with small groups of students. I also find it very satisfying to share the tricks of my trade (research, writing and analysis) with middle and high schoolers who may not yet have had much exposure to them. It's fun to experiment with different mediums to present student work, whether that's posting blogs online, aiming for podcast production or another venue entirely.

I have been teaching in one form another since I was in college. At first I volunteered with the Yale Children's Theater, where I directed plays for kids and taught theater workshops in local elementary schools.  I taught ESL and American Studies at the University of Erfurt in Germany after I graduated.  I also developed and taught a multicultural curriculum at East German high schools at a point when fears of xenophobia ran high.  Since I came to California to pursue my PhD  I have taught at Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSF and DeAnza Community College. I also teach privately.

I have a BA from Yale, MA and PhD from Stanford.

I have taught at Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSF and DeAnza as well as privately.

I start out by talking with the student and his/her parents separately to understand what there needs and expectations are for tutoring.  It's important to me to understand how those needs differ between students and parents in order to bridge the gap from the start.  I work so the student to develop a curriculum/ schedule that meets stated needs and adjust once I understand the pace the student's learning.

Middle and high school students

that said, I have regularly volunteered for my children's cooperative nursery school and enjoyed working with the preschool curriculum.  L

Does the prospective teacher explain concepts clearly and simply?  Does she do so with a smile and a sense of humor? Does she listen to you? Prove adaptable to different ways of thinking?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Have I put sufficient time and energy into learning the material or am I putting the burden of learning unduly on my teacher instead of on myself?  (What are good study habits? Read Addie, take notez, review key concepts, ask yourself questions about them.
