About PHILIPPA
Accomplished pianist and singer Philippa Smith-Tyler enjoys helping her students of all ages, from 3 to 99, learn to be great musicians with professional voice and piano lessons.
Whether the objective is to sing or play piano (or both), she helps her students learn their instrument intimately – yes, vocal chords are instruments too! – bringing out the best in each student.
During voice lessons or piano lessons, she works with the student to develop an appropriate training curriculum, mixing the art and science of music to match your child’s goals and abilities.
She encourages her students to work hard and recognize that “practice, practice, practice” is the key to success. She also inspires students who may not be self-motivated to practice.
Ms. Smith-Tyler teaches voice and piano lessons for many kinds of music, including Gospel, Classical, Jazz and Latin.
She holds semi-annual recitals to help her students learn to play confidently in front of people, to have an opportunity to show off their talents and to use their talent in the future.
INTERACTING WITH STUDENTS AND WATCHING THEM AS THEY DEVELOP AND LEARN MORE ABOUT MUSIC
Having been in music since the age of four, I started teaching other children in the neighborhood when I was 12. I continued studying from elementary school until ___. I continue studying and teaching.
I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, in Music Education, and have studied with graduate music programs in colleges and universities, such as Westminster Choir College and the music department of the University of Maryland.

"Let's shake hands." I tell students how I want them to address me, and ask what name the student wants me to use for him/her. Parents can be present for the first lesson. Each new student, no matter the age, learns a song at the first lesson. The first lesson will entail learning how to position the hands on the piano/keyboard and how to count the fingers. Each instrument has a fingering method.
I teach (and have taught) ages 3 to 99, both piano and voice.
First speak with the teacher over the phone and discuss any concerns in that first conversation. If you are satisfied with this conversation, then schedule a first lesson.
Every year I present several recitals and I am fond of each of them.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How often should I have a lesson? How long should my lesson be? How often do I practice? What type of music do you teach? I want to learn [classical/gospel/etc.], do you teach that? I don't have a lot of time to practice, what suggestions do you have? Is there a set procedure for practice time?

My son had talent for piano, but lacked passion. Philippa helped him discover jazz and blues and set him on a path he really enjoys. She is an intuitive, serious and joyful instructor!
Ms. Smith-Tyler has been teaching my daughter (now 8 years old) since she was 5 years old. They have a blast together and I am convinced that my daughter's love of music has been inspired and bolstered by Ms. S-T! She is an incredibly creative and talented teacher - and loves a good laugh. At the same time she pushes her students past their comfort zones and gets them learning. I'd recommend Ms. Smith-Tyler to anyone of any age for lessons. She's marvelous!
Ms. Philippa Smith-Tyler is kind, competent, firm and encouraging. She clearly is enthusiastic about her students' progress!
Outstanding. An excellent piano teacher for any age!!!
A dedicated teacher who taught our daughter to how to play the piano better and read music, and that's a major accomplishment.
Mrs. S-T has been our son's piano and voice teacher since he was in first grade. She has not only provided skilled musical instruction but real care and character development for him. Boys, especially pre-teen boys, aren't easy to keep motivated and engaged but Mrs. S-T knows just how to keep him moving forward and trying hard. Absolutely the highest possible recommendation.
