About Amy
Amy Quint-Millan is the co-musical director of YÁMBAWA; a latin fusion band; the fusion being that with jazz, rock, metal, indian, pop or whatever inspires us. She is a classically trained, jazz and latin pianist, with strong vocal talents.
Amy Quint Millan, hails from Michigan, USA, now a long time resident of New York City. After studying classical piano privately for 10 years, she went on to study jazz privately and took on a music major for 2 years at Western Michigan University before moving to New York City to branch out musically. Her 33 year musical career has taken her from the jazz and latin clubs, to gospel churches and more. She has graced the stage with latin legends Hector Casanova, Cuco Valoy, Candido Camero, Jimmy Sabater, Ed Fast and Johnny Almendra y Los Jovenes del Barrio to name a few. Her discography includes recordings with JaRon Eames, jazz drummer/composer Gary Fogel, Dave Santiago and Latin Affair, and most recently YÁMBAWA se mueve (YÁMBAWA) and a 2 track EP recording with AA Team co-led by Anthony Carrillo. Currently, she is working recording an album with Los Mas Valientes and will also be heard on piano and voice on an upcoming poetry compilation album by Pazcual Villaronga.
Students can expect an organic approach to learning piano with a focus on training your ear as well as knowing how to read/understand/write classical music and lead sheets. Lessons are guided by student interests and strengths while also building discipline and stamina on the piano. The first thing you will be asked is what do you want to learn and why? What do you listen to? Listening is a large part of study. Students are also encouraged to have a keyboard if not piano that is in tune, and that comes as close to an acoustic piano sound and feel as possible (unless synthesizer work is more their preference).
Her collaboration with Anthony Carrillo, world renowned master latin percussionist/tabla and Indian/Pakistani percussion disciple and musical innovator has led them to create a diverse library of African/latin/jazz/metal/rock works which can be seen and heard on YouTube @YÁMBAWA in which she can be heard on jazz and latin piano as well as vocals.
I didn't set out looking to teach, but rather it became a frequent question I'd get when performing. Most of my students have been neighbors and friends, but I did spend many years as a substitute teacher and Assistan teacher in regular and special education for New York Public schools. I've also taught colleagues in the music business. Sometimes they play another instrument but want to learn some piano skills for composition or improvisation.

Students can expect a fresh approach to learning piano/music. Emphasis is on ear training in addition to traditional music reading. Lessons are directed by student interests and strengths while also building discipline that will grow stamina on the piano. The goals are based on what do you want to learn and why? What do you listen to? Listening is a large part of my homework.
I've had students as young as 8 and as old as 60. They could be brand new or have some basic keyboard skills and music reading knowledge. A common area of study with me is in improvisation or accompaniment styles for jazz or latin bands.
Think carefully about what your goals are musically and make that clear to your teacher. Don't be afraid to ask how your teacher can help you reach those goals and always ask questions. You will need to make practice part of your goals. Your teacher might have suggestions as to how you can make time for practicing and how much time you should to dedicate to that effort.
Because of the pandemic, there aren't many live events I've participated in by choice. But I have released many recordings on my channel @YÁMBAWA on YouTube and have been recording with a few bands including Los Mas Valientes and Pazcual Villaronga (poet).
My most recent projects have been as assistant Musical Director for Pregones/Puerto Rican Travelling Theater off Broadway for "Harlem Hellfighters" and "Aloha Boricua".

What do you like to listen to? What kind of music are you curious about? Who do you listen to or who would you like to emulate? What would you like to focus on? Reading, improvisation, theory, voicings, certain styles like jazz, stride, latin, classical, flamenco? How much time do you have to practice each week?

Details
Adults can expect to pay $50/1 hour lesson either online or at my home. If it's at the students home, I might consider it if it's not too lengthy of a drive 30 minutes or less and it would cost $80/lesson.
Children would be $40/45 minute lesson at my home or online; $70 at students home.
