About Thomas
I love the sense of accomplishment with working with students. Every improvement in score, every fewer missed question, is an achievement, and usually there are a lot of those.
I also enjoy how creative SAT tutoring is. Depending on the student, I like coming up with strategies tailored to them that help them succeed.
Finally, I just love casually talking with students about their thoughts on the text and their thought processes.
I love the sense of accomplishment I feel after working with students. Every fewer question wrong is an achievement, and it's easy to see how much students have improved because of their results from tests.
Also, I love to problem solve, and come up with strategies tailored to my students.
Finally, I just really enjoy talking with students, seeing what they think about the passages, and ultimately, helping them succeed.
I've been volunteering with students for years. Just before going into high school I started volunteering at a local community center, helping students with homework. Throughout high school, I worked at an after school accelerated math and reading program at the Bruce Elementary School in Lawrence, MA.
Then, I continued working with students in college, volunteering at school near my university.
I have a composite score of 1600 on the SAT, I received training through AVID, I've been an SAT tutor since the start of this year, and I've been working one on one with students since right before high school.

I start by getting to know them and building familiarity. Then I go over the necessary materials with them, take a test to figure out their strengths and weaknesses, go over test strategies, and then start working through problems with them.
I've worked with tons of different students of many different ages. Anywhere from 9 to 16 years old. I've worked with students who struggle to focus, and students who know what they're doing but need some help avoiding careless mistakes.
I would say do research on the SAT, then ask them for test strategies and see if their strategies match up with your research. I would say to take into account personality compatibility, a tutor's score on the SAT, and their teaching experience when deciding.
My first semester in college, I volunteered at a nearby middle school. I would go twice a week through the semester, and help the students with Math and Reading.
There was this one student, Jackson Gerding, who would get excited every time he saw me in class, and would talk to me about his interests. By the end of the semester, he was sad to see me go, and gave me a card with his name and a smiley face on it, which I've held onto and cared for since.
