About Joe
Safe Family Defense is taking a whole new approach to teaching personal safety and defense, offering basic and advanced pistol classes, firearms safety, shooting fundamentals, CWP classes, and AR style rifle classes in the Greater Columbia area. We provide an alternative to the harsh, ego-filled training typically found within your average academy.
Joe Shahoud of Safe Family Defense has been featured on WLTX News 19 and the New England Journal of Medicine.
We are all Certified Range Safety Officers, SLED endorsed CWP instructors, and Certified NRA instructors in the pistol and rifle disciplines.
We are honored to work with so many beginners to the world of firearms and how they relate to self defense. Our largest client base is women. There is nothing more fulfilling to us than working with someone that is apprehensively shooting a gun for the first time, and with proper instruction and a short period of time, is able to shoot confidently like they have been doing it for months.
For decades we have witnessed and heard disturbing testimony from CWP/CCW holders about how lacking their concealed weapons permit classes were that gave them the “credentials” to carry a concealed firearm.
We’ve made it our mission to change that.
We provide a safe and encouraging learning environment for women and men regardless of their current skillset. It is our mission to ensure that each and every student that walks through our doors be equipped with the ability to:
– Truly know the law.
– Understand firearms safety.
– Make proper decisions in a self defense situation.
– Fully understand the concealed carry lifestyle and what it really entails.
Joe Shahoud has been a handgun enthusiast and an advocate of personal defense his entire adult life. He believes no one should ever be a victim and strives to make a difference one student at a time. He is an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor with certifications in NRA Basic Pistol Shooting and NRA Home Firearms Safety, he’s an NRA Certified Range Safety Officer, holds the required certification by SLED to teach and administer South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) classes, and is the exclusive ConcealedCarry.com Network instructor for the Midlands. Joe is a proud member of the NRA, USCCA, The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and the Second Amendment Foundation.

We offer one-on-one personal training that is by appointment. We also offer public and private group Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) courses as well as Basics of Pistol Shooting courses that can be enrolled in right from (concealed information)
Safe Family Defense has worked with beginners that have never shot a gun before to experienced individuals that just want to get better or obtain a SC CWP.
When looking for an instructor in this area of expertise, make sure you are able to verify their students' experience with confirmed testimonials and reviews. Google and Facebook are great for this. I would try to stay away from the macho, aggressive type of instructor. Of course you'll also want to make sure that they have the qualifications required to be an instructor in this field.
Recently, we had the opportunity to work with a woman that has severe sensory issues, but was hoping to be able to able to operate a handgun for defense purposes. Loud noises and strong forces would have a bad effect on her. After taking the time first in the classroom to fully teach everything in an inert setting and then transitioning to the live fire component of the training, Joe was able to break through her fear and sensitivity. Within a couple hours on the outdoor range, she was shooting 4 inch groups with a .22 pistol. She later moved up to a 9mm Glock 19 and was achieving the same results. We have never seen a student to proud and so accomplished. It was wonderful.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What exactly is the student's goal? Is it to simply become familiar with guns? Is it for personal security; maybe to carry concealed? Are they seeking training because they believe they might like to get into the shooting sports? Is the student interested in the entire package of personal defense with the firearm being just one component? Is it to learn gun safety? These are all questions the student will want to have an understanding of prior to reaching out to an instructor. This way it will be easiest for the student to articulate exactly what they are looking for.
