About Mark
I am a National Board Certified Teacher for science and retired from public school teaching as a project-based science teacher. I use teaching and learning techniques that I have gained from that experience to offer a student-centered approach to learning what I feel is the greatest, life-changing activity a person can do - learning to surf. In addition to being an expert surfer, I also kitesurf, paddleboard surf, bodyboard, and custom shape surfboards. I am a certified lifeguard with worldwide surfing experience including extensive travel to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Puerto Rico. I lived in Hawaii for twelve years surfing the famous North Shore and spent two years in Australia hitchhiking and searching for surf. I can honestly say that nobody that is teaching surfing in Florida has more experience in either teaching or surfing.
"Surfing saves lives!" is how the saying goes and nothing could be more true. This sport is ancient and sacred in many ways with an extreme connection to nature and wildness found just at the shore at every beach. A surf session is rejuvenating to a person's soul and addicting to the point of planning your existence around the pulse of the ocean. I can't imagine a life without either a surfboard or the opportunity to use it. I love to help others achieve what they dream about. There is no better dream and that of learning to be a part of the ocean and surf.
I started teaching surfing specifically when I lived in Hawaii and worked at a group home for foster boys for the United Way in Honolulu. I was the Recreational Activities Coordinator and taught bodysurfing, bodyboarding, and surfing to the boys who were of Hawaiian descent as a way to build confidence and instill pride in their incredible cultural heritage.
Twelve years adventure guiding in Hawaii including surfing instruction, bodyboarding instruction, and Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
Forty years worldwide surf experiences in waves up to twenty feet.

It is all about the student! Everyone comes to learning with a variety of different skill sets, attitudes and fears. I like to spend time understanding each of these areas in my students before attempting to pass on any information about skills or get into the practice required for standing on a board. I have high standards for myself and understand the difficulties of learning about the many aspects of the ocean as well as the boards that are ridden. I start with phone or video consultation, then organize a beach where the student will be comfortable. Once at the beach, we have a surf session together. Typical of a session is just relaxing at the beach, discussing observed ocean conditions, planning on the session, talking about boards, waxing up and watching out for each other. Warmup yoga and skills are practiced on the beach, then the nearshore zone and finally "out back" where the water is deeper and waves are generally bigger.
I teach surfing because I want to pass on the knowledge that I have gained to help others live life to the fullest. Nothing bothers me more than seeing "instructors" who could not care less about the sacredness of surfings heritage and are there just to make a buck, pushing students into waves for an hour, and then that is it. To learn to surf, you should find someone who realizes that what they are teaching you is the best thing you will ever try to learn. Surfing will change your life for the better.

Learning with mark, you have a true teacher not just a simple surf instructor. Not only has he surfed some of the most beautiful places on the planet but has enjoyed all the experiences that go along with it. Living out of huts in Costa Rica, road tripping down the coasts of Australia and so many more. The stories and thoughts from an interesting man like this are worth the time. Not only that but he happened to be an absolute pleasure to be taught by as a science teacher as well! Years of teaching experience placed into a wonderful session of surf and waves is something not to be missed out on if you are looking for a wicked fun experience.

$70 per hour private lessons include surf equipment.
$350 for Ocean Water Skills course including bodysurfing, bodyboarding, surfing and paddleboarding.
I only teach private or semi private classes of maximum four people.
