About Tenaya
I am the CEO of Big Kahuna Swim Academy and I have teaching students how to swim and be safe in the water for over 10 years, as well as having over 20 years of experience working with children of all ages and abilities.
Our main focus is water safety and drowning prevention.
We teach our students the skills they need to know (the 8 Basic Water Safety Skills) in order to save themselves if they are ever in a life threatening water emergency.
Once our students become deemed water safe, we start helping them become a stronger and more confident swimmer; building up their endurance and helping them solidify a great foundation for learning basic, all the way to advance stroke technique (including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly).
All of my instructors are CPR/First Aid/AED Certified and have been trained directly by me.

The amazing thing about what we do at Big Kahuna Swim Academy is that we get this once in a lifetime opportunity to help kids (and adults) learn a skill that will stay with them for the rest of their life... a skill that can actually save their life.
What we do is more than just teaching our students how to swim, it's teaching them how to save their life. And with drowning being the leading cause of unintentional death for kids under the age of 5, this skill is paramount to any child's safety.
I was naturally drawn towards working with kids at a young age, being a senior volunteer with the San Bernardino National Forest Association I learned real fast that not only did I like working with and being a leader for kids, but I loved it.
As far as teaching swimming is concerned, I had a classmate in high school who drowned because he didn't know how to swim properly. This is what fueled me to take a job as a swim instructor in 2008.
All of my employees are CPR/First Aid/AED Certified through the American Heart Association and are trained by myself.
I have been teaching swimming for over 10 years and have been working with kids of all ages and abilities for over 20 years.

With new students we try to find out what they are comfortable with in the water, what skills they might already know and get to know their personality and what type of learner they are.
We make it a priority to not push a student past what they are capable of. We take the necessary time to gain a sense of trust and respect with our students that inevitably helps them learn faster.
Once a student has learned and mastered the 8 Basic Water Safety Skills, we move on to teaching them more advanced swim techniques.
I have worked with students of all ages, all abilites. Including, but not limited to: students/children who are autistic, blind, have down syndrome, have developmental delays, etc.
Make sure that whomever you decide to hire to teach your kids knows what they should be teaching your kids in order to be safe in and around the water.
If they teach arms, doggy paddling, or anything close in nature, DO NOT HIRE THEM.
You want your child to know how to roll over and float. THAT is what will save their life in a water emergency.
My daughter is starting to really get the hang of swimming and it's just so exciting to see!
She can kick across the jacuzzi all by herself. She can roll over and float by herself. She's just becoming such a little fish! :)
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Has your child had experience in the water or swim lessons?
If your child had experience, what skills can they do?
What is their "end goal"?
