About Nicholas
Nicholas (Nick) Gemas is a tuba instructor in Princeton, Texas. Nick holds Master of Music, Master of Arts, and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Wichita State University in Kansas, where he served as a graduate music education research and teaching assistant.
As an instructor, Nick has worked with tuba and brass students of all ages and skill levels. Nick has taught tuba, euphonium (baritone horn), and other brass instruments, as well as conducting, musicology, managing performance stress (stage fright), and wind instrument methods.
Nick believes music is a lifelong activity that enriches the life of anyone who partakes in it. Mastery of etude books, solos, quintet literature, band and orchestral excerpts, and the audition process, can make one succeed at the art of music performance. Then, one can find and achieve their own unique sound, and voice, as an artist.
Nick is available to teach students in Collin, Rockwall and Hunt Counties in Texas.
I enjoy working with tuba and euphonium students of all ages and skill levels. I also enjoy teaching music history, music appreciation, music theory, conducting and other related areas in instrumental and vocal music.
I started teaching tuba as a high school student in the mid-1990s!
Master's degree in tuba, Wichita State University; B.A. and M.A. also from Wichita State.

Each lesson/meeting is a chance to learn and grow as a musician. We will work on warm ups, breathing and breath support, articulation, and technical and lyrical skills. This starts on day one. For younger learners, I will give them instruction on posture, mouthpiece aperture, how to hold a tuba or euphonium, proper instrument care and basic "buzzing" technique with the a mouthpiece. We will begin by using books such as "Practical Hints on Playing the Tuba" and progress to the Kopprasch and Blazhevich etude collections.
I've worked with students as young as 6 (on trumpet) and as old as 71 (a retired band director returning to tuba).
Consult with your band or orchestra director, or other music teacher(s). Think about what kind of teacher you're looking for, such as what their background is, their experience, and their general outlook toward music and the arts. Find a positive person who will be your coach through your music career! Many instructors travel to various colleges and schools full-time. I'm proud to be based in Princeton, TX, where I generally teach tuba and euphonium students who live in Collin, Rockwall and Hunt Counties.
I was the tubist in the McKinney Community Band's most recent live concert performace (pre-pandemic) at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas.
