About Sierra
Learning yoga with me will be simple and effective. With warmness and patience, I teach techniques that are rooted in clinical research and I make sure that our session addresses you and your needs specifically. Stress being a leading cause of many diseases and disorders today, the stress management techniques you will learn can do more than reduce general anxiety, but also help you heal from injuries and conditions that have been caused or exacerbated by stress. Because the yoga I teach is holistic, it is not your typical vinyasa flow that is used only as an exercise to tone the body, an equal emphasis is put on the emotional and intellectual facets of yoga. Stress begins in the mind, but we will work to relieve and prevent stress starting on the physical level using breath and movement. From here, we are able to begin addressing the more subtle levels via progressive relaxation, imagery, cognitive reframing, and meditation. Whether you’ve been a yoga practitioner for years and want to work more deeply into your psyche with personalized sessions, or whether the word “yoga” makes you nervous but you’re willing to try anything to help with your chronic pain, the approach I take with yoga is accessible and can bring you the results you’re looking for.
Having experienced the benefits of yoga myself, I am passionate about sharing them with everyone who is ready to heal! The most rewarding part of teaching, for me, is empowering students to make these yoga techniques a part of their daily lives, and watching them experience true relaxation and healing.
Before traveling to India, I had only dabbled in yoga as an exercise, but during my time living in Pune, I began to practice daily with the 65 year old woman with whom I was living. She was a long-time practitioner and living proof of the power of yoga to keep the mind and body young and thriving. She woke up at 5:30 each morning to make chai and then teach me a Hatha yoga class on the terrace of her apartment as the sun rose. It was after living and practicing with her for 4 months that I travelled to Dharamsala to be trained as a yoga teacher. I taught for 2 years before completing my second certification, specializing in Stress Management. I saw stress management to be a critical need in our society, and one that was sadly overlooked in many yoga classes. One of yoga’s greatest benefits is its ability to calm the mind and reduce tension, yet many people see it as a mere exercise. My goal in becoming a Stress Management yoga teacher was to bring this holistic approach of yoga to students who may have only had a superficial experience of yoga.
I completed my 200 Hour Yoga Alliance teacher training in Dharamsala, India, and have spent over a year living in India since then, preparing me to teach traditional yoga classes and giving me a strong foundation of Hatha yoga. My 90 hour Stress Management teacher training through Integral Yoga at the Yogaville Ashram in Virginia has prepared me to adapt yoga and mindfulness for corporate, academic, and other non-studio settings.

We will have an in-depth consultation addressing injuries and conditions, as well as goals for their practice and various other preferences before the first personalized session.
See below for details of what is covered in the consultation.
I have worked extensively with beginner students, including athletes and older individuals who have tight muscles and injuries. For those of you who think you're too stiff, that it's too late to start, or that yoga just isn't for your body: I urge you to give it a try! In all likelihood, yoga is exactly what you need, and I can make it a non-intimidating and highly rewarding practice as you start incorporating yoga into your life.
If you are looking for a yoga teacher to help manage stress, injury, or illness in your life, you should look for someone who has a certification beyond the basic 200 hour teacher training. Ideally, they will be trained in Stress Management or Therapeutic Yoga. There are many additional certifications that can qualify a teacher to work with certain populations, such as patients with cancer or those suffering from PTSD. Ask your teacher what certifications and experience they have so you know they are experts in their specialization.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In our consultation, we will go over the following:
What are your goals for your practice? Why do you want to start yoga? (Flexibility? Stress-relief?)
What style of postures do you prefer? (Chair yoga? Yoga on a mat?)
What level of physical challenge do you want? (Slow and gentle for beginners or vigorous and advanced?)
Do you want to learn traditional or adaptive yoga? (i.e. do you want to learn Sanskrit names of postures and the spiritual teachings of yoga, or, would you prefer English names and tools for cognitive reframing?)
Do you have any injuries or conditions? (Even if you think they wouldn't impact your yoga practice, you can always mention them to your teacher to be safe—plus, in all likelihood, there are techniques that can positively support the healing of your injury or condition.)
Do you want to receive hands-on adjustments or only verbal?
Details: Music? Essential oils? Lighting? Temperature?
Location?
Length and frequency of session?

Sierra is committed to finding whatever you need to deepen your practice and help you melt stress away
I loved it. Finally, some tools I can use. Sierra is very patient and can customize her teaching to match her student's needs. Thanks.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Sierra. She has been my yoga teacher for several years, and over that time my mental and physical health have increased exponentially. She is knowledgeable, patient, and thorough, and excels at working with people of any experience level, as I learned while progressing. She is warm and friendly--a joy to work with--which are necessities with stress management yoga. In addition to stress management, Sierra has helped me manage severe knee pain through more traditional yoga practices, and has always been able to make adjustments to routines and to my form to make sure that I was getting the most out of the process.
I simply can't recommend her highly enough.Sierra is very intuitive and has a very natural way of guiding you through the session. She is gentle yet completely effective in her teaching skills.
