About Florence

Hi, I’m Florence, a London-based English tutor with a First-Class degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and an MA in Gender, Education and International Development from UCL. I’m also TEFL-qualified with a Distinction.

I’ve taught pupils aged 5–14 as an English Language Assistant in Madrid, prepared students for Cambridge English exams, and privately tutored children alongside my classroom work. I’ve also supported pupils with special educational needs and volunteered with a children’s literacy charity in Edinburgh. I’ve completed safeguarding training and hold a basic DBS check.

I’ve been lucky to live and learn internationally, growing up partly in Uganda, studying the International Baccalaureate in Costa Rica alongside students from more than 80 countries, and teaching in Spain. This has given me a love of international literature and a real understanding of how differently students learn, which I bring into every lesson.

Alongside tutoring, I work as a publishing intern and freelance editor, so I bring a professional eye for clear, well-structured writing to every lesson. I’m reliable, well prepared and always communicate clearly with students and parents about progress and goals.

Whether you’re aiming for top exam grades, building confidence or rediscovering a love of reading, I’d love to help you get there.

My approach:
I make sure students learn exactly what they need for their exams and coursework, while also making lessons engaging and fun. I teach specific skills through games, creative writing, reading and themes students care about, so tricky ideas become memorable. I once taught the past passive through a Cluedo murder mystery, and I often build grammar or vocabulary lessons around a story, a topic or the student’s own writing. For literature, I encourage students to read closely, ask questions and form their own arguments, and to read widely beyond the set texts.

How my lessons work:
Before we start, I find out each student’s goals, exam board and set texts, and where they feel least confident. Each lesson then mixes explanation, guided practice and independent work, such as essay planning, close reading or creative writing. I give clear, constructive feedback and set short tasks between lessons where helpful. Lessons are usually 60 minutes, with 90-minute sessions available for A-level and IB essay work.

My qualifications and experience:
I have a First in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, an MA in Gender, Education and International Development from UCL, and a TEFL qualification (Distinction). In Madrid I taught pupils aged 5–14 as an English Language Assistant, prepared students for Cambridge English exams, supported pupils with special educational needs, and privately tutored four children each week. I’ve also worked as an editor and volunteered with a children’s literacy charity, so I know how to help students turn good ideas into polished writing.

Who my lessons are for:
Students from KS2 to A-level and IB, as well as undergraduates who want support with essays and dissertations. I also teach English as a second language to all ages. Whether a student needs to boost their grades, build confidence or simply rediscover a love of reading, I tailor every lesson to them.
