About Harper
Hello everyone, my name is Harper and I’m currently a Teaching Assistant in a secondary school (all subjects and ages), with lots of prior experience in tutoring. Through my day job I have been fortunate enough to run both literary and social & communication interventions, and received training in precision teaching, growth mindset, emotional coaching, comic strip conversations and autism burnout. I am currently undertaking a Level 2 course in understanding ADHD, with many more lined up to support my work as a tutor and TA. As for my academic achievements, I hold a first class History BA from the University of Liverpool and am currently doing a part-time History MA by Research at the University of Birmingham. Once I have completed my MA, I plan on attending UCL for my PGCE, either to become an English or history teacher in secondary schools. Besides previous tutoring experience and my work as a TA, I have also worked with children and young teenagers through my role as a science show presenter at a Science and Discovery Centre in Liverpool, and regularly interact with families and schools through my volunteering at the local heritage sites Osterley Park and Pope’s Grotto.

Having extensive experience as a tutor and teaching assistant, I can say with confidence that every child is different and therefore lessons are adapted to suit the individual needs and preferences of each student. I draw my teaching style from current pedagogy and so generally include elements such as active recall, visual aids and the “I do, we do, you do” approach to tasks. I like to encourage engagement in lessons by drawing on the interests of the student, adapting the work so that it revolves around areas or subjects they are interested in. For example, if you love a certain movie, I could incorporate a still from the film and ask you to write a description based on that picture, as you would for Question 5 of the GCSE Language Paper 2. Whether you are just beginning secondary school or preparing for your GCSEs, my tutoring sessions will work to complement your school lessons, going into greater depth and helping catch up on any missing knowledge, while aiming to best suit your individual needs and interests.
