About Emily
I am a final year medical student from the University of Auckland. I am passionate about teaching, and love to watch my students' confidence grow over time. I love what I study and hope to help students find their passions too.
Rather than students being reliant on a tutor to understand concepts, I believe great tutoring develops a student's learning techniques to the point where they become self-sufficient and develop skills to learn effectively and maintain a great work-life balance in years to come through uni and beyond.
I tutor students on a short-term basis who want to prime content before the year starts. As well as long-term, for students who want to prime weekly for the week ahead or work on in-depth content consolidation and synthesis to achieve a high GPA.
At University, I achieved A+ grades in my first-year Chemistry, Biology and Medical Science papers. I was in the top 30 students in my year in the CHEM110 paper in first year university out of a class of 1000+ (according to grade distribution of the Clinical Selection Test in 2020). I have finished 5 years of Medical school and an intercalated BMedSc(hons) research year.
I have over 400+ hours of tutoring experience, teaching NCEA and at a first year university level. I have taught classes (~20 students), small groups (2-3 students), and one-on-one. Many of my students have gone on to get into Medicine at the University of Auckland. I have also worked with students from a range of backgrounds, with different needs and goals. I have been a Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) mentor for first year students at the University of Auckland, and a mentor as a part of the Women in Health Network at the University of Auckland. I love learning and science, and this translates into my enthusiastic and warm energy as a tutor.
Outside of my studies, I love hiking, skiing, and spending time with friends and whānau. I'm an avid musician and have completed my Grade 8 flute exam with Distinction with Trinity College London.

Our first lesson will be geared towards getting to know each other, your previous grades and subjects, your goals, and how we can best make tutoring fit for and benefit you.
Going forward, I will plan an agenda for each of our lessons and send lesson summaries of what we have covered, along with further resources and exercises to utilise after our lessons.
My tutoring style sets students up to achieve A+ grades and consolidates study methods so they can achieve at a high level without tutoring in the future. Multiple of my students have gone on to get into MBChB from OLY1 by honing in on and strengthening their study techniques.
Lessons can be:
- Priming for content to come ("pre-studying")
- In-depth revision and synthesis of content already covered in your lectures/labs using exam questions
Before each lesson:
- Lesson agenda set out
- Send me questions and concepts you'd like to cover
During the lesson:
- Combination of teaching concepts, mind maps, and practice questions, tailored to you
- Teaching methodologies including the socratic method with elaborative interrogation, dual coding, active recall and scaffolded learning (not as complicated as they sound!)
- Setting you up with learning and study skills which you will continue to benefit from after our sessions including active recall, spaced repetition, mind mapping, blurting and many more
After each lesson:
- Lesson summaries sent
- Resources and homework (tailored to you) which complement the lessons
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Emily.
Perfect! Emily is an exceptional tutor who provides highly structured, clear, and effective university chemistry support. She recently helped our daughter break down complex CHEM150 Acids and Bases calculations, including navigating the nuances of weak acid and base assumptions.
What sets Emily apart is her excellent post-lesson follow-up. She provides detailed, step-by-step written summaries of the formulas and problem-solving methods covered in the session, along with clear guidance for independent practice. She is incredibly organised, encouraging, and precise in her teaching style.
Highly recommended for any student looking to master challenging chemistry concepts and build practical exam confidence.Perfect! very well-planned & structured lesson, helpful with notes and course guides :)

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I’ve known Emily for many years and have worked alongside her as a colleague. She has an incredible heart for her students and values their wellbeing as well as their academic success. Emily is experienced in tutoring both commercially and privately, I highly recommend her as a tutor.
I was introduced to Emily by a friend and she’s been a great help as I prepare for medical school. She’s very hands-on with her teaching and always open to feedback, which really helps me understand tricky concepts better. Emily is also great at explaining topics in detail when I need it—she’s made a big difference in my confidence with science.
