About Nishen

Hi, I’m Nishen — an Oxford Engineering Science graduate with a First Class Honours degree and a Master at Harrow School, where I teach Mathematics, Computer Science, and Design Technology & Engineering. I’m passionate about guiding students through school admissions tests, particularly academic scholarship exams in Mathematics for top independent schools, as well as university entrance processes. I also help students excel in A-Level and GCSE Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Design Engineering. My tutoring approach is highly personalised and centred around understanding each student’s unique strengths and challenges.

I begin by identifying your learning style and specific goals, then adapt my teaching methods to suit your needs. I aim to create a supportive and engaging environment where you can build confidence and develop a deep understanding of the subject matter. I place a strong emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking, ensuring you’re equipped not only to grasp concepts but also to apply them effectively in exams and real-world contexts. Whether you’re preparing for the Common Entrance exams for top schools, working towards an academic scholarship, refining your university application, or tackling a complex A-Level topic, my goal is to make the learning process effective, focused, and enjoyable.

Outside of teaching and tutoring, I enjoy travelling and exploring new cities — Oxford, with its rich cultural and academic heritage, remains a favourite. I also unwind with a game of snooker or chess, which helps keep my thinking sharp and strategic. I’m committed to providing a tailored learning experience that supports your academic journey and helps you achieve your full potential.

What I Offer:
A-Level Tutoring: Specialisation in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, and Design Engineering to help students achieve top grades.

University Admissions Mentoring:
Navigate Oxford and Cambridge admissions with tailored advice on personal statements, interviews, and application strategies.

Engineering & Physics Admissions Tests:
Comprehensive preparation for the Oxford PAT and Cambridge ESAT.

Typical Lessons (School Admissions):
When preparing students for Common Entrance Mathematics and Mathematics scholarship exams to top independent schools, I generally have 1 hour lessons once or twice a week.

My philosophy combines strong foundational mastery with creative, flexible thinking. I encourage clarity of method and precision in written solutions, while also introducing rich, non-routine problems that mirror the style used by schools such as Eton and Harrow. My approach balances rigour with enjoyment—ensuring that the student not only feels prepared for the exam, but also develops a genuine love for mathematical thinking. I place particular emphasis on mathematical reasoning, neat presentation, and calm performance under timed conditions, all within a low-pressure, confidence-building setting.

Typical Lesson (University Admissions):

A/L or GCSE students preparing to apply for top universities will meet weekly at least an hour for tutoring in Maths, Physics. For students who are applying for Oxbridge/ top universities, I offer admissions test prep, interview prep and admissions guidance. Each session generally lasts 1-2 hours and happens weekly or bi-weekly.

Teaching Philosophy:
I believe in a personalised approach to tutoring, where each student's unique strengths and areas for improvement are identified and addressed. My aim is not only to enhance subject understanding but also to build the skills and confidence necessary for academic success and beyond. By fostering a supportive and challenging learning environment, I strive to help my students reach their full potential.

Achievements:
Successfully mentored students to obtain offers for Engineering courses at the University of Oxford. - Extensive experience with the nuances of the Oxford and Cambridge admissions processes. - Consistently helped students improve their academic performance and confidence in challenging subjects.

As a Master at Harrow School, I have a strong understanding of the British independent school system and the expectations of top academic institutions. I help families assess school fit based on a holistic view of the student’s academic profile, personal interests, and long-term goals.
