About Jennifer
I am a French tutor with 6 years of experience and a Master of Arts in French Linguistics with a dissertation on the acquisition of the subjunctive mood by English-speaking learners of French. My research background in this specific area means my teaching of the subjunctive — the single most difficult grammatical challenge most advanced French learners face — is based on a deep understanding of why it is difficult and what the most effective instructional sequence is. I have taught over 210 students and I am known in my local tutoring community as the specialist to consult when students have particular grammatical difficulties that general French tuition has not resolved.

My French teaching is grammar-intensive, and I have developed a detailed and systematic approach to the aspects of French grammar that most learners find most challenging and that most teachers address most superficially. The subjunctive is the centrepiece of my grammar curriculum and I teach it through a combination of conceptual explanation, pattern recognition, and extensive controlled and free practice. I begin subjunctive instruction with the concept rather than the form — helping students understand that the subjunctive expresses subjectivity, uncertainty, and emotional reaction gives them a conceptual tool for recognising when it is required that is far more reliable than lists of trigger expressions. The conditional is taught alongside the subjunctive because so many advanced grammatical structures require coordination of these two moods and students who master them separately often struggle with their interaction. Passive voice in French is addressed with specific attention to the differences from English passive voice — tense agreement of past participles, use of se faire in certain contexts, and avoidance of passive in registers where it is stylistically inappropriate. Complex subordinate clause types are taught as a set of structures that collectively define the difference between B1 and C1 French. My approach to verb morphology is exceptionally systematic — students learn the six or seven major irregular paradigms that account for the vast majority of irregular forms rather than attempting to memorise each irregular verb individually. Agreement rules are addressed with mathematical precision and specific attention to the agreement errors that most native speaker teachers miss because they make them themselves. My teaching goal is a student who writes grammatically correct French without having to think consciously about the rules.
