About Saskia
I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a first class hounours degree majoring in French and German. I have been studying languages and linguistics for approximately 9 years now over which time I have been improving my French, German, and Dutch. I have given private lessons to high school students before as well as spent time as a teacher's aide for high school French and aspire to become an accredited teacher of languages other than English.

I want the best possible outcome for my students so I like to tailor my method of teaching to their needs. If the student is primarily a visual learner then I will create colourful notes, diagrams, and such to appeal to their study style. If they prefer a practical approach, I will devise interactive ways to cater to their learning, such as consistent oral practice of new grammatical concepts or interactive quizes.
I believe the most effective way to help students improve is to make the learning process enjoyable and engaging so they are actively focusing on the task at hand. This way the information they're being given is better retained and the subject becomes something they look forward to and something about which they are eager to learn.
As for lesson structure, languages offer a unique opportunity to engage a range of abilities in a variety of related areas, which offers great flexibility to fit the student. However, when I draw up a lesson plan my usual structure is to start off with a warm up activity, such as tongue twisters, to get the student thinking about and in the target language. Afterwards I would begin with introducing/going over grammar rules, displaying and explaining notes, and going through helpful sources. Afterwards I would show the student some questions and test them on the new rule(s). Following that would be the time for the student to approach me with any questions/issues they've been having with the language in class so we could work on that. After that I would move on to oral practice and engage with them on one of a range of topics to improve their fluency and vocabulary, unless the student had an oral coming up or needed to discuss a specific topic. From their we would begin to conclude the session, which is when I would ask how the student found the lesson, if they needed any clarification before the end, as well as what they would like to focus on for the next session.
I have a passion for languages and would hope to use it to give students the best possible chance at success by making the process focused, yet engaging so that learning is not a chore, but enjoyable and enriching.
