About Sophie
I am a third year medical student at the University of Bristol. I am a friendly, approachable person who is interested in the way in which the body functions, with a particular interest in immunology. My enthusiasm for science stems from having a brilliant biology teacher at school and I would like to encourage other students to enjoy learning. I have over 3 years of experience tutoring in the past, online and at school. From this, I have learnt that listening to the student is key to helping them develop their science skills in order for them to reach their potential!
This year all my GCSE students achieved at least 2 grades above what they were on before they started tutoring with me!
As I have recently left school I am familiar with the biology and chemistry syllabuses. I am interested in helping students get the grades they need to progress in their area of study, by improving their exam technique so they may achieve excellent results. I'll keep the sessions as fun and interesting as possible!
I received 3 offers to study medicine in my last year at school and was successful in securing my top choice university by achieving my desired A-level grades and successfully sitting both the BMAT and UKCAT exams. Therefore, I am also able to give advice on medical school preparation and help with personal statements.
In the past, I have not found a tutor who simply dictates knowledge to their students to be a very helpful teacher. Therefore, instead I use a range of different learning techniques including quizzes, flashcards and diagrams to keep the sessions interesting and help the student to understand how they learn best. Building on this, I will help the student to develop better revision techniques so that they can continue to learn outside of the tutorial sessions.
I make sure that the student understands the basics of each subject that they are struggling with before progressing to more challenging areas of the topic. This will allow the students to interpret and correctly answer exam questions, which will help them to achieve excellent results.
I set tests for the student to do outside of each tutorial so that I can measure how much the student is improving and which areas need more work. Moreover, each session will involve past paper questions to help cement knowledge learnt in the sessions.
