A qualified secondary maths teacher.
Patient, persistent, keeping it simple, building solid foundations and getting excellent results.
I enjoy teaching a range from helping learners who can't yet multiply or add to National 5/GCSE/iGCSE, Higher/A- Level/IB and complex problem solving and recreational maths like the maths challenge or nrich project (run by Cambridge University.)
In my lessons, I...
1 get clear on the goal e.g. Get an A in the Higher maths exam.
A lesson goal might be to be able to find the intersection of a line and a quadratic graphically.
2 assess to find student's level (e.g. to complete the goal they must be able to (i) graph a line (ii) graph a quadratic (iii) choose an appropriate range i.e. where the lines intersect)
3 provide a bridge between the current level and the goal
4 provide homework to give practice in that skill
5 Ask them to explain / walk through how to do a problem using that skill e.g. graph and find the intersection between a line and quadratic
My philosophy as a learner and a teacher is
Have a goal but focus on the process
Keep it simple
Be persistent, be patient, try different strategies to see what works and work hard!

Chris was my private tutor for about a year. Back then, I was preparing for a public recruitment exam aiming to get a major promotion in my career. The exam includes writing English essays. I failed once and I realised that my major shortcoming was my deficiency in English writing.
That’s when I approached Chris, my old English teacher at the British Council, for help. Chris is very helpful and passionate about his work. He attended very well to my study needs and built a bespoke course around them.
Although I knew that my English writing was the problem I had no idea how I could improve myself. Thankfully, Chris helped me to assess my writing and analyse my strengths and areas that needed improvement. Then he set out structured lessons and course work to help me gradually improve the areas that needed work. In a course of one year, I was able to achieve significant improvement in my writing.Chris tutored my 15 year old son (S4) who was struggling with English close reading. As well as doing close reading exercises and encouraging my son to read more, Chris helped him to understand the marking scheme and how to approach the exam.
