About Ankita
Myself ankita ,
What has teaching others taught you about yourself, others, and the world? What wisdom have you derived from these experiences?
Over the past decade I've taught incarcerated men, UC Berkeley undergrads, and middle-class suburban tots and teens. Here's a sampling of lessons I've learned...
What I've learned about learning/teaching
People need to feel safe, physically and emotionally, in order to learn.
Creating solid human relationships is more important than creating solid lesson plans.
Lots of smart people are great lecturers but only mediocre teachers. A good teacher will step back and let students actively make connections -- both conceptual and interpersonal.
Stories are the ultimate teaching/learning vehicle. If a pict

2. Patience & Tolerance
3. Accepting Generation Change.
4. Continuous learning
Each time I have taught others I have had to let go of any ideas I have about what is about to happen, how that class will respond to me or the potential change that I can offer. In other words, I have to start from zero, from a place of not knowing.
The thing about teaching is that you just never know what is going to transpire during the life cycle of a class. I say "life" because it is living. I've learned that the class is a living entity. It deserves the respect that a shaman would give it. In a sense, you are that shaman going in deep, fishing for the right medicine to offer at the right time.
There is absolutely no way to stereotype students without severely compromising your approach to teaching. Similarly, there is no way to predict which students will really blossom in your class. No way to predict that. The minute you think it's that smart student in the front or the charming one that you look forward to seeing, it's the quiet one in the back that will come to you at the end of the class with a card thanking you for changing his/her life. I'm always shocked when this happens.
The physics of teaching is like wading around in a dark ocean. You never know how a wave of your hand is going to create waves through the pool of consciousness. I have been surprised to find out that there may be a few people in the class that do not belong there. Yes, it's true. Some students should be in another class and the reasons may have to do with you. Your character, philosophy, or even personal history may not jive with certain people. And I'm not talking about simply liking you as a teacher, I mean something on a deeper level. I've had students hate me and still belong in the class. But for others, there may not be the right psychic connection, the right karma available to successfully form a teacher/student relationship.
