Kindergarten–2nd Grade: Simple Patterns Goal: Recognize and create repeating patterns. Example: → What comes next? () Activity: Use colored blocks, beads, or drawings to make your own pattern — like ABAB or AABB. Key Idea: Patterns repeat — they help us predict what comes next! ⸻ Grades 3–5: Number Patterns Goal: Find patterns in numbers and sequences. Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, __, __ → Each time we add 2. Next numbers: 10, 12 Challenge: Write your own pattern: Start at 5 and add 3 each time. What are the first 6 numbers? Key Idea: Patterns in numbers help us understand how math grows. ⸻ Grades 6–8: Patterns and Algebra Goal: Describe patterns using rules or expressions. Example: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 → Rule: “Start at 1 and add 2 each time.” We can also write that as: ️ n = 2x - 1 (this gives the n-th odd number) Challenge: If the pattern starts at 4 and adds 5 each time, write an algebraic rule. Key Idea: Patterns can be written as formulas to describe how numbers change. ⸻ Grades 9–12: Patterns and Functions Goal: Connect patterns to functions and graphs. Example: A pattern that doubles each time: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 Rule: y = 2^x When we graph it, we see exponential growth — the pattern gets faster and faster. Challenge: Compare y = 2x + 3 (linear) and y = 2^x (exponential). How are their growth patterns different? Key Idea: Functions are patterns written as equations — they help us model real-world situations. ⸻ College Level: Patterns in Real Life and Advanced Math Goal: Explore patterns in nature, data, and higher math. Examples: • Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13… → Appears in flowers, shells, and spirals. • Fractals: Repeating geometric patterns that scale infinitely. Challenge: Write a recursive formula for the Fibonacci sequence. F(n) = F(n-1) + F(n-2) Key Idea: Patterns are the foundation of mathematics — from simple colors to complex equations
