About Isabella

I am a History graduate from the University of Birmingham, and I am now completing my Research Masters in Medieval History, with a view to going into higher education teaching. I have had extensive experience working with young people in a teaching and mentoring role. When I am not studying, I am usually rehearsing - music has always been a big part of my life, and I have mentored and taught violin and voice, working with young people from all over the UK. I hold a pastoral and mentoring role at the European Youth Summer Music Course, as well as having volunteered with many youth ensembles. I was also part of the University History Mentorship Scheme, and so have spent a lot of time working with young people and figuring out the best way to convey knowledge, ideas, and help empower students. Having found exam technique incredibly challenging while at school, I know how difficult writing and exams can be. Yet with the right support, students can thrive. Having accessed the academic writing support I needed, I now not only hold a 1:1 and a highest-scoring dissertation prize, I have a skillset which I believe everyone should be able to access, and which I would like to share.

I take an interactive and exciting approach to bringing history alive, as well as teaching academic writing skills for class tests, public exams, and in the transition to University and further study. My lessons cater for all secondary school ages, especially GCSE and A-Level, as well as undergraduate university level. I have specialised knowledge in tutoring and mentoring those with dyslexia, taking an empowering approach to studying with dyslexia and establishing individual needs and strengths. I like to teach through doing - working through examples and ideas with students, and encouraging them to work with the academic system so they can thrive in their grades, while giving them space to explore their own ideas and questions. I am happy to be flexible in terms of how student-driven the classes are. Especially with younger students, or those still working on their confidence, I take the lead in providing specific work to focus on together, and provide a more structured plan. However, if preferred, I also like to encourage a more independent approach whereby students take the lead on what they want to work on and specialise in, and we work together in helping them improve and gain their confidence in those areas, whether it be a time period, working on essay questions, looking at how to analyse primary sources, etc. Lesson lengths can vary depending on students' levels and availability, but they tend to be either 30 or 60 minutes.
