About Philip

I graduated with a Second Class Upper in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. In addition to this, I have a Distinction in Mathematics in Senior School Certificate. I have been teaching Mathematics since my days in high school. Mathematics is something I do naturally, and I enjoy it. I have tutored over 100 students in Mathematics. Most of my students have achieved outstanding performances in their various examinations. I always try to make every student I teach have a deep understanding of the subject. I allow students to learn at their pace and learn what they need to know. With a proper understanding of mathematical concepts, learning Mathematics becomes interesting and enjoyable.

I get to know the level of understanding of the student in any topic to be taught so that I can know where he or she is weak. To achieve this, I consider the student's level, learning pace, and interests. I have multiple teaching methods I use depending on which method works best for a particular student. I take things step-by-step to make sure the student understands better. The best teaching method for a student will improve his or her overall performance. I apply patience and friendliness when teaching students at their level until I can bring out the best in them.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in mathematics in secondary school. My interest in private tutoring started towards the end of my undergraduate education.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics and I love it because it is part of my daily life. I discuss topics that are of interest to my students or topics that I feel will help my students do better
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My math tutor during my secondary school inspired me. He taught me how to study mathematics and excel.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think the qualities required to be a good tutor are patience, friendliness, and a strong desire to impart knowledge.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In one of my maths classes in secondary school, one of my fellow students asked my teacher how he "managed" to get a certain number in a problem he was solving. My teacher replied to her that in maths you don't manage to get anything. Every result must be analytically proven. This incident caused everyone in the class to burst into laughter. She was later clarified on the issue.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Early in life, learning mathematics used to be a challenge. However, when I started lessons with my tutor, his personalized teaching enabled me to master the subject.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a great passion to impart knowledge. This is one of the qualities that has made me a great tutor
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am patient, friendly, and passionate about what I do.
