About Matthew
I am a guitarist, recently graduated from the jazz course at Leeds Conservatoire. I have been playing the guitar for many years which has given me a great deal of passion for my instrument. I have taught privately on and off before and during my time at university and have experience with students of many different ages. I have experience performing in both solo and group settings. This includes work playing background music at hotels and events, in big bands, function bands, small jazz groups and pit bands. I get a lot out of playing with other musicians and I believe it is a key part of developing as a player as you understand how your instrument fits in with others in a group setting and in different genres. I have enjoyed playing many different styles of music since learning the guitar and although I chose to study jazz at university, rock and blues are styles I still love playing and listening to as they are what got me into guitar. I have used this appreciation of different styles to develop my own knowledge and abilities in order to be able to play in different bands and broaden the scope of my professional career. My professional experience allows me to teach students in almost any style they want to learn. I am happy to stick to a genre that a student likes but I also encourage students to listen to music they may not have heard before to see what else their instrument can do. I believe the most important thing when learning an instrument is enjoying it so I always try to find the best way to engage each individual student.

I can teach rock, pop, blues, and jazz with lessons being structured to suit your needs, in 30 minute - 1 hour sessions. They can follow exam books or be more loose and focused around learning songs. I have lots of experience with Rockschool grades but am able to teach other exam boards too. I have taught students of all ages and abilities over the past 5 years so whatever stage you are at I can help you to progress to where you want to be.
