About Antony

I have taught Mathematics at The City College for many years. In those many years, I have seen many students---some good, some average and some great. But what I have not seen, is a student who wasn't able to learn something about mathematics from me. I have seen students go from being weak to being super good in their math. The reason for this kind of turnaround is in the teaching method. As human beings we all learn a variety of things in a natural way, for example, you learned to speak without attending a speaking school---naturally pick it up.

Here's my first lesson: So, you're taking a math class in your high school, middle-school, or University or you just love mathematics. The first thing to know is that Mathematics is not a spectator sport. You don't watch it being done and think you're going to learn. You learn mathematics by actively doing mathematics with a piece of paper and pencil in hand. That's the bottom line. But that is not all. You must always have a question or two about the mathematics you're doing---no matter if its silly. It's still a question. You must make an attempt to solve your problem before anyone else. Write down your thinking. Almost always, it's the thinking that leads you in the right or wrong direction. So thinking is very important when doing mathematics. In fact, its the most important part. Needless to say, we are bad at "thinking" and therefore, our doing of mathematics is bad also---therein lies the problem!!!!
So, work on your thinking, just like you work deligently on telling lies, making your jump-shots, scheming, etc. You're good at these things because you PRACTICED and PRACTICED and it became second nature. You have to do the same with mathematics.

There is an underlying language that goes with mathematics that no one tells you about. I called Math-English. This is English mixed with math symbols. I implied above that "thinking" is most of your issues. I said "most". The other issue is speaking and understanding Math-English. Here is an example of a Math-English sentence:

Find all real numbers for which x^2 + 2x + 1 = 0 is true.
Find the solution set for x^2 + 2x + 1 = 0.
Solve the Quadratic Equation x^2 + 2x + 1 = 0.

Those are three Math-English sentences ask you to do the same thing. Some of you might be comfortable with one sentence but not the others. So learn "Math-English" and "thinking" (known as logic) will wipe away almost all your mathematics issues! Here endeth the lesson.

I am not sure what to tell you about my price or prices. I think my price is very fair and reasonable. You're getting something from me that your teachers in the classroom or even other tutors couldn't give you and that is making you "grasp" your material with confidence.
