About Owen

I graduated from Denver East high school in 2019. During my time there I was Captain of the debate team and a part of the We The People program. Both of these programs, as well as the Honors and AP courses I took, cemented my interest in geopolitics and American political science respectively. I took this interest to the University of California, Santa Barbra where I dove into student activism and student government. While there I also discovered my fascination with the natural world, quickly adding a physical geography degree to my course load. After transferring to the University of Colorado Boulder,I became involved in the Geography Club which funneled me into a tutoring position. This enabled me to fine-tune my approach to 1-on-1 learning as well as deepen my connection within the department. Currently, I am researching with the Institute of Arctic and Alpine research at CU. I manage data surrounding groundwater and snow water equivalence.
These experiences has equipped me with unique tools as a tutor; my experiment teaching debate has taught me how to communicate the functions and relevance of political institutions while my experience tutoring at CU has allowed me to perfect my approach to tutoring earth science.

Hello All!
My name is Owen Dehmler-Buckley. I recently graduated from the University Colorado, Boulder with a degree in Political Science and Geography.

My lessons always begin with a brief review of the subject matter covered in the previous lesson as research continues to suggest that repetition enshrines "structurally relevant" information better than other learning strategies (Bromage & Mayer, 1986). Next, we will move onto key vocabulary which helps to frame the subject at hand with its most relevant concepts. Lastly, we will fill in the gaps between these concepts, understanding how they are connected and the implications of these connections. Moreover, I like to communicate with the student's teacher(s) to track the class' progress and ensure proficiency on core subjects.

Unlike other tutors, I begin my relationship with a student by evaluating their learning style. This questionnaire determines the enrichment resources assigned (audio, visual, or hands-on) as well as the manner in which subjects are explained. For example, the Doppler effect (an important principle in earth science) can be represented audibly (passing sirens, a radar gun) or visually (ripples in a pool, changes in frequency). Similarly, social science concepts like federalism and the electoral college may be easier to grasp in a visual setting (maps and charts) or an auditory setting (a chronology of the US Constitution).

These lesson's are tailored for middle to high school aged students to connect what they are learning in class to the complex and ever-changing world around them. In my experience, these connection facilitate grade boosts as well as a deep care for the subject matter at hand.
