About Finlay
Hi, I’m Finlay! I am a 1st Class Music Graduate (BA Hons) from the University of Huddersfield, a Grade 8 Violinist, and an active multi-instrumentalist performing across the UK. Music has been the central passion of my life, and my goal as a tutor is to make learning an instrument an exciting, empowering, and deeply rewarding experience for every student I work with.
I want to teach because I know firsthand how transformative the right guidance can be. I was put off from music for almost 2 years all thanks to the approach of teachers in my secondary school! Music shouldn’t feel like a rigid, stressful chore—it should be a creative outlet that builds genuine confidence. Whether you are a parent looking to introduce your child to their very first instrument, or an adult beginner finally taking the leap to learn your favourite songs, I bring a high-energy, patient, and structured approach to every lesson.
With years of live performance experience in function bands, extensive musical training across five instruments, and a background in group leadership, I pride myself on total reliability, clear communication, and professional delivery. I break down complex musical concepts into simple, encouraging steps tailored directly to your personal goals. When you learn with me, you aren't just memorising notes on a page—you are developing a lifelong skill, building real confidence, and having fun every step of the way.

Teaching Approach:
Learning an instrument should be practical, high-energy, and tailored to the music you actually love. Whether you want to work through classical grades or learn your favourite pop, rock, or jazz tunes, my focus is on breaking complex technique down into clear, digestible steps so you see quick progress without getting bogged down in dry theory. Every lesson combines core technique, ear training, and real-world songs to build both confidence and solid musicality.
Lesson Structure & Length:
30-Minute Lessons: Ideal for younger children, absolute beginners, or quick focused check-ins.
45 to 60-Minute Lessons: Best for intermediate students, production/theory lessons, or deeper deep-dives into repertoire and arrangement.
Qualifications & Experience:
1st Class BA (Hons) Music Degree (University of Huddersfield)
Grade 8 Violinist (ABRSM/Trinity)
Active Professional Musician: Perform nationwide in live wedding function bands and compose across pop, classical, and jazz genres.
Who These Lessons Are For:
Violin: Absolute beginners through to advanced (up to Grade 8).
Piano/Keyboard & Guitar: Beginners to intermediate (chords, rhythm, reading notation, and pop/rock tunes).
Bass Guitar & Saxophone: Absolute beginners looking to get off the ground.
Music Theory: Those looking to pass theory tests or just gain a better understanding of the frameworks of Western Music Notation
Music Production: Those who want to learn how to compose, record and produce original works through a new or familiar Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Logic Pro X, Ableton and Garageband
