About Conor
Hi! I'm Conor and I'm a graduate Chemical Engineer, having graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2023 with first class honours! I loved my degree and I'm glad I chose it for two reasons in particular: 1: Being able to apply knowledge gained at school and college to my degree is really rewarding. It has a great mix of Chemistry, Physics and Maths, which was the perfect mix for me and what made it stand out when I was deciding what to study. 2: I'm developing really useful skills that an engineer will need throughout their career. From the first few weeks we were being taught about the design of processing plants, which made me feel like I was being prepared for a career in engineering. Thanks to my placement year at AstraZeneca I was able to put these skills to use in exciting pharmaceutical projects! I am now currently using the skills I picked up at university at a renowned engineering consultancy in Leeds. With exams, I always made sure I was prepared by the time exam day arrived. Practice is key - the more questions I did, the more understanding I gained. These tips, although perhaps obvious, should benefit anyone wanting to succeed. For A-Levels, the added incentive of a university place at stake hopefully provides you with even more motivation to succeed as it did for me! In my spare time, I enjoy playing tennis and football. I also enjoy fundraising, which has involved taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge in 2019, and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro this September!

I have had significant experience with online tutoring over the last three years. My lessons would typically be 55-65 minutes long, and I am happy to cover any relevant content. It is important that aims are set out together and identify areas that they find more challenging, addressing these as a priority before moving on to topics that are less of a stumbling block. Repetition is key to memorising and understanding concepts, so I would spend the first part of the lesson summarising and reviewing the previous week's topic(s) and perhaps working through one or two questions before progressing on to new content to ensure understanding. With new content, I would explain the topic to the student, encouraging them to ask questions whenever they feel the need to, before looking at a question together and guiding them through the necessary steps to achieve the correct answer. For topics that require more memory recall (such as colours of flame tests in chemistry, for example), visual representations are a useful tool to help retain necessary information. For degree-level Chemical Engineering content, I am happy to cover essay writing/coursework, exam preparation techniques or anything else relevant. Having recently graduated from an integrated master's degree with first class honours, I have developed a set of techniques that can really help to boost your grades. At the end of the lesson, I would make sure to give a quick summary, letting the student know what they did well in addition to what they could do with a little more work on. I would let the student know what the next lesson would entail, allowing them time to prepare independently before the next lesson. Having found these subjects very interesting myself at school and college, I would show an enthusiasm for the topics, which would make the lesson more interesting to the student.
