About Jack

As a graduate student completing my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Baylor University, I understand firsthand that mastering a new complex skill requires structure, patience, and the right guide. My name is Jack, and my passion for teaching extends far beyond the chessboard.

Before focusing on chess coaching, I spent years refining my instructional skills as an academic tutor for collegiate student-athletes, a university biology learning assistant, and a youth Taekwondo instructor. Serving as the Class President for my doctoral cohort has further reinforced my commitment to clear communication, reliability, and professional excellence.

I know that learning chess can feel overwhelming, especially for complete beginners and young students. My background in formal education and coaching allows me to adapt to any learning pace, ensuring that every session is encouraging, engaging, and built on measurable progress. When you book a lesson with me, you are not just getting someone who knows how to move the pieces; you are partnering with an experienced, dedicated educator who is deeply invested in building your child's—or your own—confidence on the board.

Hi, I’m Jack! My approach to teaching chess is entirely centered on patience, structured progression, and making the game accessible rather than intimidating.

My Teaching Method & Techniques:
Many chess coaches just play games with their students and point out mistakes as they happen. I believe in structured, incremental learning. I break the complex rules of the game into bite-sized minigames (like "Pawn Wars" or "Knight Pac-Man"). We isolate specific concepts—like safe opening principles or spotting basic tactics—and master them before we ever put all 32 pieces on the board for a full match.

A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)

Warm-up (10 mins): We review concepts from the previous week to build a strong foundation and ensure the ideas stick.

New Concept (15 mins): I introduce the day's theme, such as a new tactical trick (like a "fork" or "pin") or a specific endgame checkmate pattern.

Practical Application (15 mins): We set up custom board positions so the student can practice the new concept hands-on without the distraction of a full game.

Guided Play (20 mins): We play a casual game where we "think out loud" together. We focus heavily on applying what we just learned, rather than worrying about the final outcome of the game.

What Sets Me Apart:
I am not just a chess player; I am an experienced educator. As a graduate student in a rigorous Doctoral level program, an academic tutor for university students, and a former youth martial arts instructor, I have years of formal coaching experience. I know how to manage a student's frustration, break down complex ideas into simple steps, and celebrate the small victories that build lasting confidence.

Who These Lessons Are For:
These lessons are strictly designed for complete novices and early beginners (ratings under 1100). My program is perfect for elementary and middle school students needing an engaging, brain-building activity, as well as adult beginners who want a patient, structured guide to finally understanding the game.
