I prefer private lessons over group lessons because it is easier to focus on the psychological aspect of the approach to an "unpleasant" subject. There is no cooking recipe for a well-done lesson or for an effective study methodology: it varies from person to person, but I've also been on the other side of the fence, thus I know what needs to be proposed and when in order to achieve personal development and not only a good grade.
