Find out more about Mark

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I discovered my passion for music as a toddler. My Dad would play The Beatles, Dean Martin, and the Grateful Dead in the car and at home. I always loved it. When I was 6 he bought me my first guitar and I never looked back. I became obsessed with music and getting better at my instrument. It led me to going to Berklee College of Music and making music my life and career.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I would have to say classic rock and pop from the 60's and 70's, the music I grew up on. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, Elton John, etc...
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I think one of the most difficult things I could give a student of mine would be to learn a series of pieces and songs that don't have guitar in them. For example learning a violin concerto but playing it on guitar, learning a John Coltrane sax solo on guitar. It difficult but also one of the fastest ways to improve. It forces you to think outside of the confines of your instrument and will instantly make you a more unique and technically advanced player.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument is hard to master in its own way. But I would have to say that violin has to be one of the hardest. Not only is it probably the hardest instrument to start but it's also incredibly difficult to master because requires intense technical skill as well as an incredibly sharp ear.
  • What are your keys to success?

The first thing is that you have to love it. There will be so many obstacles and moments of frustration in life no matter what your goal is. Without a true love for whatever it is that you are doing, it is so hard to push through those difficult times. Another key is patience. You won't always get to where you are trying to be on your timeline or in the way you see it going. You have to trust the process and be willing to be patient.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would say, Prince, John Lennon, and Jeff Buckley. All three are no longer with us but all have had such a lasting impression on me. Prince's musicianship, John Lennon's songwriting, and Jeff Buckley's voice. They all have made albums that always bring me back to why I fell in love with music.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

My days at music school weren't the easiest. I struggled to find where I fit in and where my place was. I felt like I wasn't jazz enough for the jazz kids, not rock enough for the rock kids, and not songwritery enough for the songwriters. But what I learned about myself is that, I like what I like and it's important to just be me. That's something that I also take into teaching as well. I think it's important for students to just be themselves, regardless of what they think they should be, it's important to stay true to why you wanted to learn an instrument or learn production in the first place. I'm here to support.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I think that I have a very unique approach to teaching. I'm great at understanding what a student needs and wants from me and I know how to explain things in a way that they can understand. I try to be understanding, patient and nurturing. Learning music is supposed to be fun and exciting. I try my best to make it that way.
