About Danika

I was a tutor before I was a teacher and now I am back to tutoring before teaching again. Since my own schooling years I leaned towards the humanities, enjoying writing convincing and entertaining pieces, and really being able to understand all different kinds of texts.

I come from a very small town in Merseyside (although, four years at University in Exeter and a year teaching in South Korea with many Americans has destroyed my accent) and have dedicated a large chunk of my life to English language and literature.

Although I personally love Shakespeare, I have been a state school and a private academy teacher, so I understand he is not everybody’s cup of tea. However, because of this, some of the highlights of my career working with young people have been:
- My Year 9 class gasping collectively at the end of Macbeth
- Treating Dave’s ‘Black’ as a piece of poetry and analysing it with my Year 8 class when teaching Noughts and Crosses the play
- Getting students to care about and understand non-fiction pieces by playing ‘Spot the Fake News’

I’m 24 years old so my own memories of secondary school are still quite raw, and I understand the pressures of balancing studies and growing into the person you need to become. I take my role as a tutor really seriously because of this, and want to take into account your wants and needs when planning and conducting lessons, so that together we can reach the goals that you have. And hopefully, you’ll like books a little bit more by the end of it.

After getting my bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Exeter, I applied for my PGCE there. Prior to this I had volunteered as a coach and tutor at local high schools, and my love for working with young people and getting them to care about words and my personal passion for creating PowerPoints and workbooks pushed me into the classroom.

I have taught GCSE and A-Level classes in English Language and Literature, from developing appreciation and important skills in KS3 to preparing students for their exams in KS4 and KS5. Everything from non-fiction analysis, to essay and creative writing, to understanding key texts - I have planned lessons for and conducted in a classroom setting. And over the last year have taught in South Korea with ESL students at a middle school level, similarly language and literature classes. Here I won the Teacher of the Term award as well as consistently having the highest satisfaction rating from the students at the academy. I have also worked on a one-to-one basis with students having social difficulties in classroom settings in public schools, and have taught them classes in a variety of subjects so that we could work on their wellbeing as well as their academics.

As a tutor I bring in the same dialogic approach and conversation and projectfocused learning as I do in the classroom. I believe that this active engagement as well as being presented with a variety of activities to do related to the topic is the best way to keep up engagement and enthusiasm whilst ensuring learning.

I want to offer lessons to high school students between the ages of 11 and 16, those lessons being an hour long, and the topics of which I wish to tailor to the individual students needs. After an introduction class to introduce the topic to the students, I would like to assess their abilities and propose a learning plan for future lessons to them and their guardian, so moving on we can have a productive and fun time working on their English skills.
