About Samuel
I am a warm, bubbly 3rd year Chemical Engineering student at the University of Manchester with 5 years worth of tutoring experience in Maths and Chemistry.
The first reason that I believe I will be the perfect tutor for your child is because of the fact that I have an extremely thorough understanding of Mathematics and Chemistry concepts. This is proven by the fact that I achieved an A* in A Level Maths, an A in A Level Chemistry and an average of 87% across 3 Mathematics modules (96%, 79% and 87%) in my degree. This understanding allows me to work with pupils of a variety of ability levels due to the fact that I usually know multiple different ways of solving a problem and can work around gaps in the pupil's knowledge.
Along with my strong understanding of the subject matter, another thing that makes me the perfect choice of tutor for your child is my cheerful, bubbly personality. My previous experience as a charity street fundraiser has given me impeccable interpersonal skills and a positive, can do attitude. This allows me to easily build rapport with tutees and make them comfortable in my presence very quickly. Also, this attitude has been crucial in keeping tutees motivated and hopeful after setbacks and during high pressure periods (such as exam seasons).
Due to the reasons listed above, I was able to help my most recent student exceed her predicted grade in Maths by two points (achieved level 6 after being predicted a level 4) after being on the brink of failure. This enabled her to be accepted into her desired sixth form.

One thing that sets me apart from other tutors is the fact that I have a lot of energy in becoming very knowledgeable about the manner in which the brain retains information and learns new concepts. This knowledge was gained through reading various books on the subject such as 'Make it Stick' by Peter C Brown and 'Moonwalking with Einstein' by Joshua Foer and has been a major reason that I have been able to maintain a first class grade in my degree. Because of this, I know exactly which revision techniques to use in each session to ensure that the topics covered stay in the pupil's long term memory. I also make sure to explain the reason behind every exercise to improve my tutee's all around confidence with revision and learning in general.
All of the techniques that I utilise in my sessions are based on the 'active' approach to learning. This means that most of the time students will be answering exam style questions and testing themselves as opposed to just taking notes.
