About Ruben
I have five years of teaching experience—I’ve worked as a volunteer tutor in libraries, instructing students ages 5-18 in math, and privately with students in their homes and online. This includes working with international students, college students, and elementary school students. I’ve also taught as an ACT/SAT Math tutor for 2 years, raising students’ scores by an average of 6 points (ACT) or 860 points (SAT). I also have 2 years of experience teaching Calculus I and II, and Physics, to undergraduate students. With 5s on the AP Calculus BC exam and the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam, and a 34 Math ACT score, I’m more than qualified for any subject thrown my way.

Prepping for the Math SAT/ACT? Completely lost in your physics or calculus class? Stumped by your coding assignment? You’ve come to the right place. Hi, I’m Ruben. I’m a Statistics and Computer Science student at the University of Arizona. I teach math, physics, and programming.
My goal is to make learning engaging, not stressful. I prioritize understanding—it’s more important to develop intuition for a concept than getting a perfect grade.
That grade doesn’t hurt, though! I do test prep and homework while helping you know the subject. My students are MY priority. I want you to succeed in your learning goals!
What I teach:
-Elementary Math
-Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II
-ACT and SAT Math Test Prep
-AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC (Calculus I and Calculus II)
-AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics (College Intro-level Physics)
-Introductory Programming in Python, C++ (Note: I do NOT teach object-oriented programming.)
How a typical lesson goes:
If it’s our first lesson, I spend about 5-10 minutes introducing myself and getting to know you. I make sure to establish learning goals: what do you want out of this lesson? Do you want to focus on homework, review, test prep, mastery, etc.?
If your focus is on homework/classwork, then the lesson will be designed around the materials YOU bring, such as homework, textbooks, study guides, projects, etc. If your focus is on test prep or mastery of a subject, then the first lesson will operate as a diagnostic: we will take some time gauging proficiency, and then homework will be assigned based on your skill level.
